NNTP time settings for 2003 domain servers and workstations? GPO?

I cant recall this one..

But i noticed, since getting rid of our old DC, that our domain member

server is reporting errors about not finding the time server for the old

server.

I checked in GPO management, I dont currently have a policy in there, though

i think i may have in the past.. or maybe i set this at login (I cant recall

the simple one line script that set it either)..

What is the proper way to set the default NNTP server for the domain.. is it

login script or GPO or does it matter?

(This main NNTP server points out to a time server on the internet for synch).

Thanks in advance

Hello markm75,

By default in a domain, all dc's synchronize the time with the PDCEmulator,

all member servers and workstations with one of the dc's. So you only have

to set the external time source for the PDCEmulator.

Have a look here:

I've already ran the w32tm command on the new PDC emulator box.. but hours

later.. one of the member servers keeps putting eventid 17 in the system log

about not finding the time service at the Old PDCemulator, which no longer

exists....

I'm not sure how to auto correct this, or will this require a login script

or GPO setting to correct (both here and possibly on workstations)..?

Thanks

Re: NNTP time settings for 2003 domain servers and workstations? G

The specifics of the error are:

Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS lookup of the manually

configured peer 'serverdc'. NtpClient will try the DNS lookup again in 480

minutes. The error was: No such service is known. The service cannot be found

in the specified name space. (0x8007277C)

Again, this server no longer exists.. i forced the transfer of all roles to

the new server.

I checked Rsop.msc.. the time setting isnt getting forced through here.

I also ran net time to query the time server.. it shows serverdc2 as the

server... granted this server is a DC, but no longer holds any roles.. so i'm

not sure why its showing here either..

So i'm getting two different servers listed.. one in the event log (the dead

one).. then with net time, an active DC, but it doesnt hold the PDC role (at

least when i check in ADUC, the new server, ServerNewDC, has the role).

I would think, if this is controlled by AD, when i type net time.. it should

say ServerNewDC, since it holds the role.. but i cant figure out why?

Re: NNTP time settings for 2003 domain servers and workstations? G

**actually on another member server .. i have eventid 29 going on there:

Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from domain

controller ServerNEWDC after 8 attempts to contact it. This domain controller

will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a

new domain controller from which to synchronize.

So in the event viewer, this looks like the right server, but a net time

still shows it looking for ServerDC2.

Hello markm75,

On the problem machine try out this command:

w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update

Thanks.. this was what i needed on my member servers..

But i'm getting eventid 29 on my other DC for some reason:

The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more

time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No

attempt to contact a source will be made for 15 minutes. NtpClient has no

source of accurate time.

I tried a tip on this page:

http://www.chicagotech.net/troubleshooting/eventid47.htm

But that didnt fix it..

Any thoughts?

Are you having more than one dns server. Coz since you have transferred the

different roles it should get changed by means of dns entry. Is that pointing

to correct pdc

This DC.. has for its DNs.. the ip of the other DC, followed by itself..

both are dns integrated servers..

Is there something in DNS i should look for?

Under _MSDCS.domain.local.. PDC.. _tcp.. it points to the correct dc..

I'm also getting eventid 38 on a troubled member server:

The time provider NtpClient cannot reach or is currently receiving invalid

time data from 192.168.100.14

(ntp.m|0x0|192.168.100.3:123->192.168.100.14:123).

192.168.100.14 would be the correct PDC emulator/DC, while .3 is the

troubled server.

Re: NNTP time settings for 2003 domain servers and workstations? G

I realized i hadnt done all the registry changes on the PDC/DC...So I reran

through these steps:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Type

Change this REG_SZ value from NT5DS to NTP

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\AnnounceFlags

Change this REG_DWORD value from 10 to 5 here.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer

was already configured to point to the external time service..

Now I stopped and restarted the Windows Time service using the following

commands:

net stop w32time

net start w32time

On the troubled servers.. i ran w32tm /resync /rediscover

In the event log .. all is well now..

Except for one thing.. it says its getting the time data from the 3rd DC

(non PDC)/active.. why wouldnt it be getting it from the PDC/DC one?

Any ideas?

Actually.. i spoke too soon.. i'm back to having eventid 29's on this one

server.. and its actually pointing at the PDC again (at least for w32tm, not

for net time though)...
