headphones for skype not working

hi i recently bought a set of headphones from pc world to use for skype.

when i load skype up and plug in the phones and make a test call i can hear whats being said to me but when i say something the microphone isnt picking it up.

ive tried to follow the instructions on the troubleshooting page but getting nowhere.

the phones have 2 pins and the computer has only 1 port for the phones not sure if this has anything to do with it. i can hear from the green pin but not the red.

what do i do to fix this so i my mic works so other people can hear me

The sound card should have a green hole for the earphones and a pink one for the microphone.

 

Do you have this?

no the front of the computer only has 1 hole for headphones

And at the back of the computer?

the back of the computer has a green,red and blue port.

the red and blue port are empty but the green has a pin in with wires heading to the speakers i think

The red one at back is for the microphone.

 

Also check that mic is not set to mute.

Maynard I am just adding to this thread.:)

 

Click start/right click on my computer and choose properties/hardware tab/device manager.

 

Locate sound and use the + to open the drop down list.

 

Right click on your sound card and choose update driver.

 

You can also try an uninstall driver and reboot while headphones are connected and powered on or turned on.

 

Please could you tell me if you have a realtek/HD audio listed in device manager?.

 

If you do you need to download a fresh driver from Realtek this will also give you the HD audio software which is used to configure your sound card such as speakers,head sets and mics.

If you can hear the sound when the earphone is plugged into the socket on the front of the computer, I think it will only need the microphone is plugging into the correct socket at the back (the pink one) for people to hear you. If most microphone/headphone sets are anything to go by, a difficulty might be that when the earphone lead is plugged into the socket at the front of the computer, the lead from the microphone might not reach around the back.

 

It might need either the microphone or earphone lead extending so that you can use both the earphone socket on the front and the microphone socket on the back. Maybe the existing lead would separate a bit so that it will reach both front and back but it seems a shame to risk spoiling the headset.

 

An alternative would be to plug the microphone lead (red pin) into the microphone socket on the back so people can hear you and use the computer speakers, rather than the headphone, for listening to them. That's more or less the arrangement I use for Skype.
