I am currently trying to share files between my Packard Bell desktop on windows Vista and my laptop on widows XP (SP3). Both are connected to the same wireless network via Seimans Gigaset router.

I have enabled network sharing for both hard drives and selected appropriate permissions on both machines (with the help of one of these threads!),I have also set both accounts the same username and passwords but still cannot get the machines to connect.

I have temporarilly disabled the router firewall and software firewalls to see if they were causing the problem but this did not make any difference. Port 445 TCP is open anyway (I think)

I can see the shared folders in My network places on both machines but for some reason cannot connect to them.

I have been trying to sort this for two nights now and am very close to firing both computers out of the window and taking up fishing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Tom

Hi Tom

The first thing to check is that you have Hotfix KB922120 installed.

Have a look in Add/Remove - make sure the Show Updates box is ticked.

If you can't see it, you need to download the Hotfix, and as you are running SP3 you need to request the download link from Microsoft.

Do it here

Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP

Click on the View and request hotfix downloads link.

What happens when you try and open a folder?

Have you switched off password protected sharing in Vista?

Many thanks for the response,

I have installed the hot fix on laptop as advised can still see but not connect to the shared folders/drives.

When I try and open a folder I get the following messages on each machine.

Laptop - Shared Folder is not accessible. You might not have the permission to use this network resource. Contact administrator. Access is denied.

Desktop- Windows cannot access Shared Folder Check the spelling of the name Otherwise there might be a problem with your network.

I then Press diagnose and get the message -

'Windows confirms that Shared folder is currently online but is not responding to connection attempts at this time.

Then goes on to say probably a firewall is blocking port 445 SMB but as stated all firewalls were temporarily disabled and I still received the same message.

Password protected sharing is switched off in vista. I have put full permissions on the three shared files/drives so really can't see where I am going wrong.

how are you sharing the files.

are you sharing the whole hard drive or a directory.

first i would make sure they are both in a workgroup.

start>control panel>system>computer name>change..once in there delete "workgroup" and add in a unique name. (just on xp)

on vista (come on memory) start (orb) control panel>System and Maintenance>Change Settings>Click the Change button. then type in the same unique name you used in XP.

once both are rebooted try to see if you can see the shares.

other things to try.

making share shared folders is on in "networking and sharing center" in vista.

see if you can ping the xp box from vista and vise verca. start>run> type in "ping ip off machine" obvious the ip off the machine not wording and no ".

check and double check your firewall settings in windows and any anti virus software.
