Guest Angel Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Happy New Year everyone!! My question: I cannot use Adobe 6.01 on that old small computer. It keeps coming up with an Illegal Operation pop up. I do have Adobe 3.02 on it because I got that off my Office 97 disk. I tried to get the Adobe Reader from the Adobe site but all they have for Windows 98SE is the Adobe 6.01. Nothing in between the 3.02 and 6.01. I went up to the http://www.oldversions.com and tried to download 5.05 from there but it kept freezing up. When I did the 3 finger solute, it told me that http://www.oldversions.com was not responding. I was going too try to get the download from http://www.oldversion.com to my desktop that has the DSL and burn it to a disk but I think it downloads automatically to the machine itself. That plan would not work I am using, at this time, dial up on that old computer. I kept trying to get the Adobe 5.05 and it kept freezing up. I do a restart every time after I try because this other computer has only 64 mg of RAM. I do not feel at this time that I do not want to go through the expense of an Ethernet Card and a wireless connection for it. That machine is old, how old, I do not know. It is what I call a "thrown together machine". Hardware age, unknown. Question: How can I get the 5.05 version for that machine? Another question: Do I need it or will the 3.02 be good enough? Angel

Here's an example that's $24, but I've seen them for under $20. http://tinyurl.com/2moqjx To be honest, that machine is just too old and on the bottom end of what can run Win98SE. Guest Angel Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Re: Adobe Reader issues Thank you very much Gary, I was able to do the burn and install. It appears that it will work for that machine. Like you say it is really not built to do much. No one knows how old that machine is. If I ever try to do anything as far as downloads it can't cut it! I think the only time I will use it to get on line is to update the Avast!, and in case something happens to this one that I would need to yell to the group or email for help! Maybe what he did was upgrade it to 98SE from 95 or older machine. The old keyboard was from 3.11. I think that is what my youngest son said. What the other parts were from, only the guy that put it together knows, maybe! The one that is hooked up to the DSL I bought June 2000. Angel "Gary S. Guest Angel Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Re: Adobe Reader issues Gary, Thanks, but the only problem I would run into if I reinstall the Windows 95, is that I do not have the drivers for the sound card nor the drivers for the modem. Guest Angel Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Re: Adobe Reader issues Hi Gary, I went out this morning and stopped at the lady's house and asked her to ask the guy for the drivers for the modem and the sound card. She said that they are to return to work tomorrow and would ask him then. I hope it does not slip her mind. I will go to her in a couple of days and remind her. I wish I had his phone number so I could ask him myself. If she forgets, I will have her have him call me or get his phone number so I can call him. I never met the man. Everything has been arranged though her. Angel "Gary S. Guest tech reader Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Re: Adobe Reader issues Dear Angel, Why u r wander behind some one and waiting longly to get drivers ? you can simply download it from http://www.driverguide.com. its free. but i doubt that the new wireless adoptor will support for win 95 / 98. better u go for a router or some thing like that. becose the routers are system / os indepentent. its work based on ip. u can connect win 95 or 98 or xp or vista any machine to it. so even after u upgarde ur machine or switch to a new one ... it will works. a better choice i think. thank you With regards, Vinoth you may use it for its life time even u "Angel" <angel@noway.com> wrote in message news:u%23oHsEoTIHA.4532@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > No apology required Gary, just wanted to make sure it did not get lost or > sent to a spahm file. > Angel > > "Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Re: Adobe Reader issues 1. Obtaining and installing drivers from Driverguide.com is NOT for the amateur, which Angel is. Hell, I don't even like trying to find drivers on that site. Real easy to get lost and not find the right driver(s), and the wrong ones will just make Angel's situation worse. If she was certain what hardware she had, I would have found her the drivers a long time ago. It's a long story. Oh, and the machine was given to Angel, she is using it as a spare bedroom machine, and she already has a newer one that she uses for her main purposes, though it's still rather old and not able to decently support more than Win98SE. 2. Your knowledge of networking hardware is pitiful. How in the world is a router supposed to replace a wireless adapter? She already HAS a router, with wireless included. What she needs is an adapter for the computer, to replace the NIC that's already in it. Yes, it is probably difficult or impossible to find a wireless adapter (PCI card for the computer) for Windows 95 or 98 Original Edition, but almost every wireless adapter I've been able to find this morning supports Windows 98 SE just fine, and that's what Angel has -- Windows 98 SE. 3. Your spelling is atrocious. Learn to spell properly, and maybe someone will take you a bit more seriously. Then again, your current habits, both in spelling and thinking, suggest that this may be a futile enterprise. -- Gary S. Guest tech reader Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Re: Adobe Reader issues Dear Mr Gary, Thank you for ur comment. i also told that i doubt about the new wireless adoptor supports for win 95/98. i ask her to do cabled network from router to machine. it works much better and it need some configuration only no chance of driver / hardware conflict, mismatch ect. I know i am not well in english, As u told i will certainly try to improve it. i will try to change the "futile enterprise" into a "fruitful enterprise" with regards Vinoth "Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Re: Adobe Reader issues Well, see, there you have it. I take it as a given that if it is reasonably possible to use hard wiring I will always go that way. I assume that if a wireless is even being considered, it's because it's mobile or it's extremely inconvenient to hard wire. Anyway, as I said, I was in an agitated state and didn't take the time to read your post thoroughly or even try to understand it fully. I am always put off by the shorthand you're learning -- "ur" for "your" or "you're" (and there is an important difference between those last two.). Please, if you want to learn English, learn proper English. What you are learning is a short-hand that only came into broad use a few years ago. You won't find any serious information, whether in books or on the Net, written in "net speak". At least, I don't. -- Gary S.
