It isn't at all clear what you are asking, but I'll take a guess.

Are you talking about a file that you receive as an E-mail attachment?

Are you trying to open it in Notepad, and it makes no sense?

To open any file, whether you get it as an attachment or any other

way, you need to have the appropriate program installed. Computers

don't come with every possible program installed, and none of can open

every possible file we receive unless we are willing to install the

appropriate software to do so. My guess is that you are tying to use

Notepad to open a file for which it's not appropriate.

If I'm right that this is an E-mail attachment, please tell us what

the file's extension (the characters at the end of its name, after the

dot) is. That will tell us what kind of file it is, and we can tell

you what program you need to open it.

Or if my guess is wrong, and this is not an E-mail attachment, then

please clarify what you're asking.

Why aren't you using a mail reader?

What you are likely seeing are the characters which a real mail reader uses

for formatting. Notepad does not do formatting.

Hi Karen

We need a bit more information than that :-) What type of file was it

you were trying to read? Did you get it in email, or some other way?

When you say it was "garbled", what exactly do you mean? Full of funny

symbols and shapes, or with long codes between < and >, or. . . ?

Do you know what program the person who sent the file to you used to

create it?

Post back with as many details as you can and we'll be glad to try to

help. Happy New Year!

It comes out with funny symbols and shapes. This happens when I try and

retrieve a bill from my electric company. It only opens in notepaid, and

gives no option to open in adobe reader. in other emails, notepad won't open

To get the proper help...you need to state WHAT FORMAT the document is in.

just for example , if your electic bill come in .pdf format

you will need either Acrobat Reader or Foxit.

They are both free downloads...and I suggest Foxit as it's less bloated

Hi Karen

That means the file isn't plain text (which is all that Notepad can

read) but was created by some program in its own format. I'd guess as

it's a bill it's likely either a PDF file or a Word document. Can you

tell us the full name of the attachment, particularly, as Ken said, the

part after the dot? That will tell us what type of file it is.

What program are you using to read your emails?

Hi Karen,

Sounds like the type of file you're trying to open has the extension set

to open in Notepad, which won't give you the correct results. My guess

is that the file is a PDF. Try installing Adobe Reader and then try again.

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Or if you already have it installed, go to Add/Remove programs in

Control Panel, click on Adobe Reader and see if there is a Change

button. If so, click it and select Repair when prompted.

Karen, please give us more information.

What is "it?" An e-mail attachment? If so, make sure you're not hiding

file extensions:

Open Windows Explorer (or double-click your My Computer icon). Then,

Tools | Folder Options... | View

Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types." Then

click on the "Apply to All Folders" button. Then click "OK."

Save the attachment. What is the extension? The three letter extension

after the "." will let you know what kind of file it is.

This issue was resolved in January 2008. You need to come back in time,

as you're in March 2008...

This isn't the first time this guy has posted with a date more than a month

in the future. According to this guy's signature he is an MS MVP...makes me

wonder about Microsoft's qualifications for the MVP title.

Or maybe he wants his posts to be stuck in peoples' newsreader for six

weeks. Thankfully I'm using Thunderbird and can easily get rid of it...

Maybe abuse mail to his ISP and hope they pull the plug, until he gets the

IIRC last time it was testing some "dated" feature, and forgot to reset

the clock. Tough crowd here though, hope I didn't misspell any words in

this post.
