Guest BMillikan Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, 98SE & ME. However, I have a ton of learning CDs for my 3-year-old and they are Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 only (some of them). So, I need to be able to get the patches/updates for Win95-WinMe somehow. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Guest Mike M Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Re: Windows 9x/98SE, Me Updates/Patches/Downloads You can still download patches and updates for Win 98/98SE and Win Me from the Windows Update site (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) or if you wish to download and burn copies to a CD for later use rather than install use the Windows Update Catalogue (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp) although the latter must be accessed from a PC running a Win 9x operating system - later operating systems are now redirected to the v7 Catalogue site that has no Win 9x content. -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com BMillikan <BMillikan@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, > 98SE & ME. Guest BMillikan Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Re: Windows 9x/98SE, Me Updates/Patches/Downloads Well, my future plan is to connec that compute to my domain and give it limited access to the internet. But, there are no such plans right now. Despite all the bad stuff out there on the i-net, there are some good sites for preschoolers (especially playhouse Disney's web site). Why am I asking? Because I'd like a fully patched/updated/upgraded Win95/Win98/Win98SE/WinMe collections of CDs for the future because I also have an (almost) 1-year-old that will be using the same software and it is only for Windows 3.1 or Window 95 (some of them). Guest Mike M Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Re: Windows 9x/98SE, Me Updates/Patches/Downloads Firefox regularly release updates or patches. The Mozilla Foundation (Firefox and SeaMonkey) frequently release security updates. No security updates for Netscape, or the Mozilla browser suite, though, because they are no longer even supported. Upgrade from those to Firefox or SeaMonkey is recommended by the Mozilla Foundation. Opera 9.25 is a security release; Opera also releases security updates on a regular basis. -- Norman ~Shine, bright morning light, ~now in the air the spring is coming. ~Sweet, blowing wind, ~singing down the hills and valleys.

The only drawback is I use Hotmail for my e-mail and it balks till I enter the password at least twice. However, I think that's Bill's doing, not Opera. Regards.... For the same reason that when you buy a well-written piece of /specific/ software, like an image editing program, you don't spend the next year having it crash all the time and having to get fixes. The bigger the company, the more apt it is to release crap just to get it out the door an make more money. That statement probably applies more to MS than anyone else. I have been using a Micrografx image editor (which had VERY useful features several years before the industry standard - and total overkill for everyone except serious professionals - Adobe Photoshop) and they NEVER released any patches - why? Because they wrote the software carefully and tested the hell out of it before releasing it. The bad part is that they are dead. Corel now sells what's left of their products. That's the sad fate of people and companies who care more about quality than money. Anyway, to make it shorter: a) because MS is more concerned with money than with quality b) because since it comes preinstalled and "free" on practically every PC sold, most virus/malware writers target IE/OE as well as Office. > At most they release a "new version" every > once in a while. Is that where they include security > changes, or do they just have fewer vulnerabilities than MS > products. SOME people say that the "insecurities" are there because MS works with the NSA and leaves them there intentionally, therefore hackers etc. are doing people a favor by discovering and exploiting those insecurities and forcing MS to make the browser etc. more user-oriented than "otherwise". Think of that what you will. Others just say MS is simply terrible at writing software but great at marketing, using /any/ tactics necessary. They have thousands of pimply kids who have never talked to each other coding their software and NO single person has ever gone through every line of the code for Vista [and XP etc.] or Office because it would take a lifetime. So that's another reason why those programs are huge, buggy and basically, CRAP. There are programs that fit on a floppy that do everything an average user could ask for. By the time you install all the ad-ons and plugins for Firefox, it's almost as big, bloated, and vulnerable as IE/OE. I tried it and found it EXTREMELY disappointing. I don't know WHY Opera isn't more popular. It is so superior to ANY of the other full- featured browsers and they are the quickest at fixing whatever minor security problems arise (SOME of the web dangers affect ALL internet programs, not just IE/OE). -- Needless to say, I disdain such idiocies as Xmas and New Year's, but I'd thought I'd play along just once... thanatoid's New Year's Resolutions. 01. I DL'd 8.52 from there and it was SO different from 7.23 that I went back to 7.23 (also, I run a 166PI/96MB for my internet needs). I am pretty sure a 98 machine can handle 8.* with no problems. Otherwise, 7.11 or anything you want. They're all good and 99.9% of attacks target IE. I haven't done a single update on this machine in at least 5 or 8 years and I have NEVER been infested/attacked/hijacked etc. >> Opera 8.50 and up is ad-free, but wasn't the 7.x versions >> still ad-infested? Is 7.23 some special ad-free version? Ad-infested is a BIT of an overstatement. There was a banner- size rectangle at the upper right which showed either random ads or, if you filled out your personality profile (OPTIONAL), ads targeted at your interests/etc. If you bought the program, you got a reg key which removed the rectangle. Then Opera became free and the rectangle was gone. I don't know at which exact point/release this happened. > Hello, > Just as a FYI, I run ver 8.51 on a P166 mmx, 3 gig > machine with 98 SE. However, I think that's Bill's doing, not Opera. I have read about other people having this problem. I don't get it - I run 7.23 on basically the same machine (see above) and it works fine. I only use Hotmail as a throwaway address for stupid sites/things which would generate spam etc. anyway. I have a $15/year pop3 account which is what I use for real email. Anyone can afford that. There are many things wrong with web-mail (AKA html mail) for a variety of reasons. My hardware is 166/96RAM/33.6 modem, 10 years and 3 months old. I was just guessing as to what will/will not run on a 98 machine - and it's the processor and RAM that matters, and you have plenty of that, not to mention you are running a later OS. I have a 2GHz 98SE Lite machine but it is not connected to the net. I don't think 9.25 would run on my internet machine, but it doesn't matter. 7.23 does everything I need it to, and I use offbyone (about 1MB and /the/ fastest browser in the world) 99.5% of the time anyway. I only use Opera to access Hotmail, my bank, and sites which don't work without Java or flash - most of which are of no interest to me. -- Needless to say, I disdain such idiocies as Xmas and New Year's, but I'd thought I'd play along just once... thanatoid's New Year's Resolutions. 01. Windows 98SE, or even Windows 98 would run just fine on my computer. Indeed, the difference between the HP Pavilion 6745C and the HP Pavilion 6746C was the OS. Windows ME vs. Windows 98SE. Opera 7.23 is afflicted with exploitable vulnerabilities, as is just about any browser version number over a couple of years old, and no longer maintained by the publisher. E.g., Netscape 7.2 has been superseded by SeaMonkey 1.1.7. > I have a 2GHz 98SE Lite machine but it is not connected to the net. Probably backwards. The newer machine can run new, more secure application. That should be the one with the Internet connection. > I don't think 9.25 would run on my internet machine, but it > doesn't matter. 7.23 does everything I need it to, and I use > offbyone (about 1MB and /the/ fastest browser in the world) > 99.5% of the time anyway. I don't have a ten-year old computer with which to experiment. I am reasonably certain that my twenty-year old boxen won't support even Windows 95 (1 HP Vectra 486/33T, which is an Intel i486DX-33MHz processor, 32MBytes of RAM, and 1 HP Vectra 25T, which was an Intel i486DX-25MNz processor, 32MBytes of RAM. The last has an Cyrix 50MHz replacement processor). However, for any stat-of-the-art computer, or even one under 7 years old, Opera 9.25 should work without trouble. -- Norman ~Shine, bright morning light, ~now in the air the spring is coming. ~Sweet, blowing wind, ~singing down the hills and valleys.

Sorry. My money would be on direct from the Opera site. I am a "keeper", and I have all of the older versions of Opera that I ever downloaded from the Opera site; all the way back to Opera 5.02. Opera 7.23 is in that collection. -- Norman ~Shine, bright morning light, ~now in the air the spring is coming. ~Sweet, blowing wind, ~singing down the hills and valleys.
