Where does a deleted file/folder from a Windows 2003 share go?

I have users that occasionally delete a file or folder(s) from a public file

share on a Windows 2003 server. I have had them look in their recycle bin

and also looked on the servers recycle bin and not seen the files or

folders. Any idea on where that deleted data is? It would be nice not to

have to restore from tape when this occurs.

They bypass any recycle bin and are permanently deleted.

Look into Volume Shadow Copy, the user can restore the file on their own

from various versions depending on how you set it up.

See:

Files deleted from a network share disappear into the never-never,

unles you have Shadow Copy installed. See here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/technologies/storage/vds/default.mspx

And here is a quote from that link:

Why isn't the Recycle Bin sufficient for reverting back to a previous

version of a file?

Ever since Windows 95, Windows has provided a way for customers to undelete

files: the Recycle Bin. However, two factors limit the usefulness of the

Recycle Bin for knowledge workers.

First, it can only be used to recover files that have been deleted by an

application that is Recycle-Bin-aware, such as Microsoft Explorer. The

Recycle Bin cannot be used to recover files deleted at the command line, for

example, nor can it be used to recover old versions of files that have been

modified.

Second, and most important for knowledge workers: the Recycle Bin does not

work for files stored on network shares.
