Guest Deena Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I would like to access my server files from my home computer. In the past I have had a Novell server and I simply entered the IP address in my home computer's browser and was connected to my server (login required). I would like to do the same with my Windows Server 2003 but I get the "server cannot be found" message when I try this. Is there some setting I am missing? My server is set up as a DNS server.

Do you use VPN since you mentioned "access my server files from my home computer"? -- Bob Lin, MS-MVP, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.HowToNetworking.com "Deena" <Deena@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5892C069-0BB4-4FAC-9A25-1BB49308E0F5@microsoft.com... >I would like to access my server files from my home computer. Guest - Michel Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 RE: Access server via browser First thing I think of is indeed how are you connected? Second: are there any firwalls in between that block the Windows File Sharing traffic (most do actually)? Are you able to do the same from "the inside" instead of home? Kind regards, Michel "Deena" wrote: > I would like to access my server files from my home computer. Guest Deena Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Re: Access server via browser No, I don't use VPN. "Robert L. (MS-MVP)" wrote: > It could be the master browser issue. Guest Deena Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 RE: Access server via browser I have the same problem if I try and access the server via a browser even if I am at work and on our network. I only have the Windows provided firewall At work I am connected either via ethernet on my desktop or wireless on my laptop. At home I use a dialup connection. Guest - Michel Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 RE: Access server via browser Just some extra thoughts on this: - Is your account in one of the groups that is mentioned in the local user right "Access this computer from the network" (or in the Deny option)? - Did you test when being logged on with another account, like one that is Domain Admin or Local Admin of the server (just to test of course)? - Tried to access it by name instead of IP (internally, perhaps the service is bound to another IP or NIC)? - Is the firewall on the server for some reason enabled and not allowing traffic?
