Hi

When I start up my PC it beeps twice and I get an error message saying that the time and settings are not correct. They seem to revert back to midnight on the 1st Jan 2000/2002.

I went into the bios and changed these as instructed but it does not seem to save the changes.

Before this I was changing them in the Time/Date Settings every time I switched on.

Can anyone help?

matt

Well just make sure you get one that matches your old one, but 99% of the time it will be a 2032, the make is irrelevant.

Thanks for the reply. Are they a standard thing or do I have to get a certain type?

I had same problem, however I was not confident enough to replace battery. My solution was to keep computer swiched on at the wall. It was still receiving power even though computer was shutdown. Now I just alter time/date settings if I go away for any length of time and have to unplug computer.

Although that may be a short term fix the cmos or motherboard battery is essential for many things besides keeping the date and time correct.

For instance it is essential for keeping the BIOS settings correct as well as other things. Eventually you will need to replace it in order to boot even I think.

It is extremely easy to replace and cheap too. Well advised to replace it at the first sign of trouble in my opinion.
