constant high cpu ; srv.sys 0x16602

Hi,

 

Our main DC (dns, wins) has a constant high cpu (60-99%).

It is a 2003 server with SP2.

Via Process explorer, i found in the threads tab that srv.sys has contant a

minimum of 45% cpu time.

It mentions 0x16602.

 

Searching on the net does not give me anything usefull.

Rebooting the server does not help. Mcafee 8.5 is installed, but i stopped

all services. Does not help.

 

What can i do ?

Hi,

 

In most cases, this issue has to do with AntiVirus software. Also see this

article:

Perhaps a temporary uninstall of McAfee is better that stopping just the

services: my experience is that just stopping it isn't enough: uninstall and

reboot should give you a better image.

 

Any other foreign software present on your machine?

I uninstalled & rebooted the server, no difference...

And no, no strange software.

You may want to see if you can get ahold of the patch from

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927435/ and see if this utilization

bug has been fixed.

 

Since you don't seem to have Trend Micro installed, the info from

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941756/ is of no use.

It is srv.sys who uses all the resources, i don't think there is a memory

leak.

However, i can ask MS to send me the patch, worth to try.

No problem. Do let the group know if it get it, try it, and it solves

the issue. It would be good knowledge to share.

srv.sys (25% - 50 % cpu in processexplorer) !!!

I'm very interested to solve this .

The srv.sys (version 5.2.3790.4161 / mention 0x17602) cpu time now toggles

between 2% and 40%. it is not longer fixed at approx. 25%. I think in my case

this behavior is justified because the server is a fileserver in a w2k3

cluster.

Well, it sounds like it at least improved slightly as opposed to being

solid at 25% as you mention. This is a good sign I think that the

patch has some benefit after being applied. Thanks for the follow up.
