Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about programs no longer working

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a Windows 2003 Server that we use for development. The built in 2

user limit is becoming a problem, our developers are stepping on each other.

I would like to increase to 4 users to be comfortable. The developers are

usually in and out of there in a matter of minutes to configure something in

IIS, copy a file, create a directory, etc. No heavy-duty apps are being

run.

Problem is when I go to Add/Remove Programs > Windows Components and select

Terminal Server and Terminal Server License Manager, I am prompted with a

warning that includes:

"Program Installation: If you continue with this installation, programs that

are already installed on your server will no longer work and will have to be

reinstalled. You must use Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel whenever

you install programs to use on a Terminal Server"

Of course this stopped me dead in my tracks thinking that if I continue, all

the installed apps on the server would be rendered useless!

This also seems to imply I would not be able to install any future apps on

the server using the app-provided installer, but would have to use the

Control Panel instead?

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about programs no longer working

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about programs no longer working

To provide the multi-user environment which a Terminal Server needs

(multiple users running the same application simultaneously and

still have different personal settings), all applications must be

installed *after* you install Terminal Services.

For you, it means that nobody can tell you what happens with your

already installed applications. Some might continue to work as

before, others might not. It depends on the application.

And after you install Terminal Services, all user applications must

be installed while the server is in "install mode", AND while no

other users are connected to the server.

You can put the TS in install mode in 2 different ways: either

install through Control Panel - Add/Remove applications (which

automatically puts the TS in install mode), or manually, by typing

"change user /install" (without the quotes) at a command prompt,

and then installing the application with the provided installer.

RE: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about programs

Hi Paul,

You are still able to use the app-provider installer. Via the add/remove

programs you are able to select the file where the installation begins with.

You can start the app-provider installer from this point.

If you’re not sure. Try this procedure first on the current TS (or a test

environment) with another application with an app-provider installer. Or

maybe you can install some application twice in another folder. Or maybe just

check if the app-provider installer starts and then abort the installation.

It the app-provider installer starts it prove that it works.

Good luck,

Yuri

Is it possible to leave Windows 2003 in "Remote Desktop Administrative Mode"

but purchase TS CALs to get more than 2 remote desktop users?

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about programs no longer working

No, that's not possible. Well, you actually can have 3 concurrent

connections, 2 normal ones and 1 to the console of the server.

Use mstsc /console.

RE: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about programs

Hello,

I have a server running Exchange 2007 and need to add Terminal Server

servies for 4 users.

During install got this "Statment" message...

Program Installation: If you continue with this installation, programs that

are already installed on your server will no longer work and will have to be

reinstalled. You must use Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel whenever

you install programs to use on a Terminal Server"

Is my Exchange going down if I install Terminal Service on this server?

Thanks for the imput!

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about programs

Why do you need TS on the server? You really should not have users

logging onto the server. If admins need access, you can enable Remote

Access and have 3 connections (2 via RDP and 1 at the console).

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about prog

Hank,

I am with you, But the customer does not want to purchase a second server.

They only have 25 users on an IBM, quad core, 18 Gig Ram, 64 Bit OS box. If I

can't change thier minds, what would happen to the Exchange 2007 install if I

now add

Terminal services to this box?

Thanks for the imput.

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about prog

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about prog

O dear, put all their eggs in one huge basket, haven't they?

Maybe the server is a DC as well?

I think that the only possible answer to your question is:

nobody knows for sure.

But I would be more worried about what might happen *after* you

have installed TS on the Exchange server!

These users are most likely going to ask you to install

applications on the server. And then they want their local printers

redirected, which means dealing with incompatible printer drivers

(especially on a 64-bit server!).

You are putting the reliability of the Exchange server at risk by

using it as a multi-user personal workstation at the same time.

Because that's what a Terminal Server is, and that's why it should

run on a dedicated server.

Re: Adding Terminal Server to existing server - warning about prog

With 4 users you could run terminal server in a virtual machine, using

Virtual Server. At least that way the system is logically independent of the

Exchange server. You'd need an additional Windows Server license for the VM.
