XP Client connections slow dramatically over time, loging back infixes

I have a Windows Server 2003 Standard install with 5 Widnows XP Pro

SP2 clients. This server houses both regular file shares and our

Small Business Accounting installation (on MSDE). After logging in

everything will appear to work well for about 30 minutes to an hour.

After that, the time to open a file or browse a folder on the server

will take anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes and connectivity to the SBA

server data is impossible - it will simply come up as "unable to

locate server". This originally happened on one PC (an HP laptop) and

was subseuently followed by the remaining computers over the course of

a month. We use Symantec Antivirus Corporate Ed. 10 on the server and

all computers, Windows Firewall is turned off everywhere. If the

issue occurs, a simple logoff and back on fixes it for another 30/60

minutes. We really want to avoid reinstalling the OS on this server.

Anyone with any thoughts?

Most likely a resource botleneck - memory leak or cancerous log file.

But check DNS too.

When you have slow connectivity next:

1) Use Task Manager on client and server to find which process is hogging

CPU, RAM, and virtual memory.

2) Do an ipconfig /all on client and server
