Guest allanc Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 One of my clients is running a dual boot XP PRO and Windows 98 computer. The PC used to have 256 Mb of RAM and there were no issues except the computer ran slow. In order to speed up the computer, I installed a total of 2 Gb of RAM. Now, XP PRO is much faster. However, according to the client, when he boots into Windows 98 the following is displayed: HiMem testing Insufficient memory to run Windows 98 All assistance is appreciated.

Guest allanc Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Re: Insufficient Memory After Upgrading RAM The instructions in the KB article resolved the problem after some more tweaking as follows: 1. Change MaxPhysPage=30000 2. Power down/up. Choose 'Safe Mode'. HiMem error persists. 3. Power down/up. Choose 'Safe Mode with step by step confirmation' (or some similiar wording). HiMem error does not occur. 4. Power down/up. Windows 98 boots properly without HiMem error. He also has cab files available to replace those in the Win98 installs so you don't have to patch on a reinstall. Galen

I tend to hate that sort of thing, but otoh I'm glad I know about it. > >On Jan 3, 5:44 pm, "Ron Badour" <So...@NoAddress.com> wrote: >> Here's some info on ram you might find helpful: >> >> Over 512 mb or more of ram: >> >> "Out of Memory" Errors with Large Amounts of RAM Installed [Q253912]http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q253912 >> >> This article contains instructions which basically say: add this line in >> system.ini, under [vcache]: MaxFileCache=512000 >> *************************** >> -- >> Regards >> >> Ron Badour >> MS MVP 1997 - 2008 >> >> "allanc" <allan.for.g.gro...@gmail.com> wrote in message >> >> news:a5a5d8b1-e6e6-424a-924c-3776e2f95a63@i12g2000prf.googlegroups.com... >> >> >> >> > One of my clients is running a dual boot XP PRO and Windows 98 >> > computer. >> > The PC used to have 256 Mb of RAM and there were no issues except the >> > computer ran slow. >> >> > In order to speed up the computer, I installed a total of 2 Gb of RAM. >> > Now, XP PRO is much faster. >> > However, according to the client, when he boots into Windows 98 the >> > following is displayed: >> > HiMem testing >> > Insufficient memory to run Windows 98 >> >> > All assistance is appreciated.- Hide quoted text - >> >> - Show quoted text - If you are inclined to email me for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-)
