Move "Documents and Settings"

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi,

we are running into space issues on the C: drive on one of our TS. With the

"Documents and Settings" consuming the major part of the drive i thought it

might be a quick way to resolve this issue to move that folder (including

contents) to another local drive.

Has anyone followed through the "Entire Folder" solution provided by

<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;LN;236621>? To make the

process quicker Microsofts CopyProfile tool would probably be used. Any input

on how reliable this process is or if it works at all would be great.

Thanks

Daniel

Are you using roaming profiles that are unloaded after logoff? Using a GPO to

automatic clean the temp internet files can save a lot of space.

RE: Move "Documents and Settings"

Dear Daniel,

Thanks for posting here.

I have viewed the KB article included in your post, and I think it should

work.

The Windows system and other applications locate the path of some special

user's profile through the Environment Variables, which we can customize

under "double-click System, and then click the User Profiles". Based on

this mechanism, I suspect if we modify the Environment Variables recording

to the destination path of "Documents and Settings" folder, the Windows

system and other applications will automatically redirect this updated

path. Therefore, I would suggest you have a try referring to this KB.

Moreover, Please ensure to backup your system (especially "Documents and

Settings" folder as well as the System Sate) to avoid the possible

permission loss or fault before performing these steps.

By the way, you can also move Paging file and Spool folder to a different

partition to save disk space on partition C:. For more information, please

refer to:

314105 How to Move the Windows Default Paging File and Print Spooler to a

Different Hard Disk

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314105

I hope this helps. If anything is unclear, please feel free to post back.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely

Morgan Che

RE: Move "Documents and Settings"

No, there are not roaming profiles. The server is only used for special

purpose application so IE temp folders should not be very crowded. Good hint

tho, i will keep that in mind for sure.

Thanks

Presuming you're using a domain, use folder redirection for My Documents,

Application Data, and Desktop - the profile folders should be pretty tiny.

You really don't want any data stored on your TS box anyway.

If all else fails, I'd use third party partition management tools to make

the C drive bigger before trying to hack the registry to relocate the

profile path...I was pretty sure that was unsupported, actually.

I thought so too and it was pretty surprised to see it suggested in an

official KB article. I agree on extending the partition, but unfortunately i

dont have any application that would provide this functionality and no budget

right now to go and purchase one.

Thanks for the help

I think the "unsupported" thing is moving the default documents & settings

folder to another volume, now that I think about it.

Re: Move "Documents and Settings"

But it *is* unsupported, and the article clearly states this:

<quote>

NOTE: The following section provides information about a

configuration that Microsoft does not support. We provide this

information for informational purposes only; Microsoft makes no

guarantee that this configuration functions properly.

</quote>

The title of the article is also an indication that you should

avoid using this method:

"Cannot move or rename the Documents and Settings folder"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236621/en-us

The only supported method is during an unattended installation of

the OS.
