Reverse polarity connector means 5 and 12 volts are reversed. 5

volts circuits would fry internally without any external indication.

One example of how wires (by color and voltage) are routed into

connector:

http://www.hardwarebook.info/5.25%22_Power

Pin one on cable connector must match pin one on pc board

connector. Pin one is indicated by some indentation or mark. PC

board may also have a pin one indication and markings for voltages.

On example of wires for another disk drive connector:

http://www.hardwarebook.info/3.5%22_Power

However if connectors were reversed, same would be damaging other

peripherals such as hard drive and CD-Rom.

Moving on to more absurd possibilities. Are power cable extenders

that are defective being used? Was power cord removed from wall

receptacle before making any cable changes? What static electric

discharge protection was performed? Where any side mounting screws

so long as to contact electronics? Anything making contact with disk

drive electronics when mounted in chassis?

Based upon what was posted, each disk drive has an internal

failure. Why do multiple drives have same failure? Quite possible

is that multiple drives from same source were provided defective. If

anything else (like system power supply) created this failure, then

other peripherals also should be damaged. Nothing from the data cable

should have caused damage.

How about this one:

You are missing an essential point. This is a fictitious system

with a fictitious problem. Therefore, nothing will EVER work,

until the troll decides he's bored and will announce his system

has miraculously started behaving like a normal computer.

I just meant that the polarity was reversed in the connector, + & - , not

the voltage.

The OP did replace the FDD and the ribbon cable.

He did not replace the new PSU.

Connectors are wires so that voltages are on outside two pins and

grounds are center two. Reversing any power connector will not create

a polarity reversal.

BTW, important for multi-voltage devices that may be 'hot-

popped' (intentionally or accidentally). If both voltages connect

without grounds, then electronic damage can result. Better designs

locate a ground connector so that ground is always first to make and

last to break. That applies to power cables and to computer cards.

But the PC standard does not do that because cables are not intended

to be changed with power applied to the box.

Close enough. I know better than ANYBODY that I should have

never been born. As for killing time and annoying (occasionally

helping) people on the Usenet, well, there used to be the town

square, then the mall, and now there's this. Not my fault. I

think the computer is second only to television in its inherent

evil.

I get the /vague/ feeling you may be a kind soul who wishes s/he

could help me, but trust me, it's not worth it, as well as

impossible. We'll ALL be better off when I'm gone.

And if my "vague feeling" was way off, just chalk it up to the

fact I'm crazy.

Power to Floppy Drive

The socket at the drive looks a lot like the one I've got in my hands--

four metal pins over a plastic bottom. I can't open my box to see my

floppy power cable. If yours looks like the one in this photo, I guess

the answer is all here. The top has a single raised plastic rectangle.

The bottom has 5/so jutting plastic barbs, looks like.

Here's another one showing what it may look like at the motherboard...

Usually, it takes only three hot coals & 17 prayers to perform an

exorcism. Some people can do it with less-- but it is very rare more

will be needed!

It seems to me from the photos the power connector can possibly go in

says...!...

"The floppy makes use of an odd looking power connector."

&

"This is one of the few power connections that can confuse new

I see no proof that DaffyD® is a troll. He was coming here while you

still were in the Win95 NG. And lots of good information has been posted

to this thread, even if none of it has worked quite yet. It does get

more/more doubtful what to do when the first good suggestions don't

work. That's when unlikely thoughts like an upside-down power connector

might seem reasonable!

Yes, bending plastic parts and (preferably LOTS of) 4 mm long

thin metal pins are STANDARD procedures when assembling

computers. SIGH.

Hate to break this to you, but "odd-looking" is NOT synonymous

with "will fry the floppy and power supply when plugged in".

Hate to break this to you, but "can confuse new builders" is

largely synonymous with "encourage trolls".

Prayers don't work on thanatoids, but I DO want off this earth,

so keep up the good work. Why only /4/ hot coals?

A lot of it /would/ have worked if someone had tried it on an

actual computer.

That's one way to put it.

Only DaffyD® could shove that connector (it /would/ take force)

in the wrong way. IF he had a problem with his floppy in the

first place. I tell you, he's a genius troll. You WILL agree,

although - apparently - it MAY take 2 more months of this.

Yet you guys still pamper him. He must be on his third pack of

Well, (although it makes no major difference) the photo at that site

doesn't perfectly match the floppy socket I see on this SONY MPF920-Z I

pulled from a discarded ME-machine. This one has another leg to the

white plastic under the 4 metal prongs, though it is off slightly to the

right. Also, someone said, in this thread or in the other, that there is

variation in floppy plugs & sockets. (I won't open my box just to see

what my own floppy power plug looks like.)

And DaffyD® has said his has gone in both ways & never mentioned he had

to force it! I'm sure he would have said!

No, it isn't. But someone did post the metal prongs carry different

voltages. OTOH, another did post that the grounds (black wires in the

middle) might somehow prevent damage to the floppy & motherboard. I

don't know. But there is this about certain connections at the

motherboard side...

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html

All about the various PC power supply cables and connectors

I'm offline & cannot quote it precisely, but it says-- sparks may fly!

I remain unconvinced that DaffyD® is a troll. He's been here before &

been frustrated before & it hasn't turned him into a troll yet. I

estimate it will take 8 more years before it does!

They are reusable after they are spit out or come out the other end. No,

no-- SERIOUSLY...

There might be a way for prayers to work. I can believe a placebo kind

of effect can happen just by having someone pray over you or care for

you-- but I'm not qualified to do it! And there are dangers involved.

Some fakes may really just want your money. Or, you may actually be the

fake looking for something. I'm not qualified to know! And I've

forgotten all my prayers, anyhow!

Maybe post your sorry story to a new thread with a warning it may cause

our hair to fall out, & see what happens. I'm offline, or I'd look for a

more appropriate site for you. But who can trust anyone?

Nah. He has a machine that defies normal measures. After that, anything

goes.

Not necessarily. Regular fixes don't always work. It could be a

seemingly unrelated part is at fault or that the motherboard has cracked

as glee said.

I have a friend who shoved in one/two hard drive IDE data cables

upside-down-- & THOSE definitely are shaped to go in one way! It was a

horrible bulge! (I was surprised to see all was well when I reversed

them!)

It could be a variation in the shape of floppy drive plugs made it easy

for DaffyD®. And it wasn't his idea in the first place, IIRC! It's been

a week about since he first posted I think. So, he could legitimately

have reached his 3rd pack of duck diapers-- but I don't know!

Yeah, it has been since the W95 days, hasn't yet. Your typing doesn't seem

to have aged a bit.

And, fyi, I confirmed with the computer shop the right away to plug in the

power connector, and I did it correctly the first time. I think all of the

ideas have been exhausted. I may try the old floppy again and also re-plug

in the power supply. I'll let you know.

I never doubted you or counted duck diapers. Don't worry, I'll take of

Agreed. Keep us informed. When all the regular solutions have all been

tried thrice & failed four times each, it could be almost anything at

fault. And hopefully nothing has gotten even worse by then!
