There are no window preview thumbnails in my taskbar. Instead I have two tiny icons plus up/down arrows just to the left of the notification area, but they are a poor substitute and difficult to navigate. In "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" the 'Show window previews (thumbnails)" button is greyed out. Does anyone know how I can get the thumbnails back?

hello.

This is caused by an incorrect thumbnail quality setting in the registry.

Reset the values to defaults using TweakUI

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Its the 7th one up from the bottom in the list.

i know it says xp still seemed to work

hope this works for you like it did for my friend. :)

mtav the first thing I notice is that you said your taskbar icons (or what should be icons) are just to the left of the notification area. This is not the default area for them.

Start by putting them back on the left side next to the quicklaunch area.

Right click an empty area of the the taskbar.

Click unlock the taskbar.

Find the right place and "drag" the taskbar back to the left hand side.

Relock the taskbar.

OK if you still don't see the thumbnails but just the icons try this.

Right click the taskbar.

In the taskbar tab put a check in Show windows preview (thumbnails)

Click Apply.

Click OK.

Thanks, but as I said "Show windows previews (thumbnails)" is greyed out so I can't tick it.

The taskbar is normal, ie located at bottom of screen with Quick Launch toolbar at left and Notification Area at right. But between them, instead of a set of window buttons, are just the three tiny ones I described (located just to left of the Notification area).

Is it possible to drop a screen shot of this dilemma so we can see what exactly is going on Mtav please.

I hope you find a shot of the entire taskbar attached.

Sorry, Wolfeymole. That had only two of the three small icons. Here' s one that shows all three. There is never anything in the taskbar between them and the Quick Launch bar.

Unlock the Task Bar.

To the right of the Quick Launch apps left click and hold the mouse and drag them to the left so there's only 3 showing.

To the left of the email icon showing on the right left click and hold the mouse and drag them to the left.

This should then show all the pages open and get rid of the stacking issue.

Re-lock the task bar.
