Quacker Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 A very simple question, but one which caused furore when I asked it at work! I am currently with Virgin Media, but retain the old @ntlworld.com email address. I am registered for so many things (too many?) using that address that to change them all will be time consuming - if indeed I can remember half of the forums at which I am registered lol. - - -That said it is a good channce to streamline those no longer used;) Two schools of thought. One is - once my VIrgin account is closed, the email address and any mails will be close. A differing one is so long as I set my pop3 details to the current ones I will be able to collect and indeed send emails via the current settings. Is there a definitive answer to this? Finally, how does one go about registering for their own address so I don't have to change email addresses every change of ISP? Seems a bit silly I have to remain with a company just to avoid changing email address. Apologies if this is in the wrong section but it is an email issue to me - feel free to remove/replace etc. Steve Quote
Quacker Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 email account on multiple PC's This is a separate query from my keeping email address query! I now have several PC's I use is several locations which is good - very good for me & internet use. My query is with emails however. What I want to know is if it is possible to read my emails from a laptop when I am away from home, and those emails remain in my inbox when I return to the home/main PC? In the past I had remotely logged into NTL/Virgin entered my details and picked up my emails, but they do not show up in the main one as either read or unread. I suppose I could read them then forward them to myself so they'd be waiting for me but this seem a bit of a faff on. Can this be adjusted in email settings and the $1m question, how? Thanks as always. Steve Quote
Goku Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Hello Quacker. I think you want to sign up to one of the email service providers so that you can retain a permanent account. That is quite simple. All you have to do is choose a email service provider, click on the sign up link and then enter your information and preferred email ID. To simplify things, I am listing some email service providers that you might want to use. You can use or all of them but that will just complicate matters further. I would advise, that you have at least two accounts so that you can use one as your primary email address which you could use for trusted contacts and transaction purposes and the other one as your secondary email address, which you can use when signing up at various sites. This is just a suggestion though, you can easily have as many email addresses as you see fit. :) IN Yahoo! Gmail Hotmail Rediff Mail There are many more but these one are the best and most reliable. Also, they are widely known so they should be acceptable on most sites and Forums. They also provide an import wizard so you should be able to import all your existing contacts and information into your new account and an announce feature which means you can update all your contacts to your new email address with a single click. Just use the one that suits you best. Hope that helps. :) -- Goku Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Steve When Virgin bought all the cable companies ie; NTL, Blueyonder, Telewest, Yorkshire Cable etc they had to stick with the email addresses that were current on those ISP's. They then promised to implement an across the board email address like me@virgin.com etc, I have yet to see this happen. If you want an absolute email address then you will have to regisiter a domain, in other words a website that will entail a unique email address, eg quacker@iloveguiness.com Quote

Yes you can do that. When you set up all your email accounts on your laptop - using Outlook or Outlook Express?, you can tell it to leave the email on the server. Your main PC will then download all messages Look in the Advanced Settings for your email account and there is a box you can tick called Leave Messages On Server Quote
Quacker Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 (edited) Thanks as always. Not sure what happened to my first attempt at this post. Lost internet connection - maybe they knew? Sorted the email query, will consider whether I really need to change from Virgin to Sky for the HD television content (and pay the cost of it). Steve:) Edit: Wolfey (or anyone really) I was going to PM you, but I seem to recall reading this was not preferred on here. Any more info on registering a domain for my own unique email address, or a point in the right direction please? Needless to say I've never attempted that. Not even sure if it is worth the hassle changing Edited June 29, 2009 by Quacker Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Having a website and an email to go with it is completely different from an email address provided from a given ISP. Here's something cheap and cheerful for you to look at. Features - Webs.com Quote
