Printing with Thin-Clients & Terminal Server

We have Wyse V30L thin-clients that run WindowsCE 5.0 operating system

and they will remotely connect to our Windows 2003 Terminal Server

(also a DC -we know very bad idea) through a VPN, and we have some

questions concerning printing at the remote side:

 

1. The remote network will have an All-in-One ethernet-based printer/

scanner/copier. We have not yet chosen a brand. The thin-clients will

connect to the TS to run an application and to access the Internet,

and will need to print to this AIO from these apps. Do we simply have

to install the driver for this AIO on the TS? We have read threads

which state to "map the printer to a native driver" but we do not know

where/how to do this.

 

2. The Thin-clients have USB ports. If we install a USB printer that

they can print to locally while using the app on the TS, do we just

install the printer driver on the TS? What is considered a "third-

party" driver.

 

3. Can anyone direct us to a list of TS-compatible printers for

Windows 2003 Server 32-bit Standard Edition SP1?

No, do *not* install 3rd party printers drivers on the TS, and

especially not for all-in-one printers! Those are nearly always

incompatible with TS and can crash your printer spooler or the

whole server.

The scanner and copier features will not work over TS anyway.

Here are the detailed instructions on how to map the printer to a

native driver:

Again, no. A 3rd party driver is any driver which did *not* come on

the installation CD for Windows 2003.

SP1? I strongly recommend to install SP2. It contains *lot* of

fixes for known problems:

 

914962 - List of updates in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2

All printers which are included with the OS. Just start the Add a

printer wizard on the server, and check the list of included

drivers.

So, if we have a ethernet-based printer on the network - in this case

it is an HP2015dn at IP 10.10.10.141 - here is how we are attempting

to install this on the TS:

 

1. Add Printer

2. Local Printer...

3. Create new port -choose Hp Standard TCP/IP

4. Supply Printer's IP Address

5. Now, we get the list of available printers and the HP2015 is not

listed.

 

Are you saying that we cannot use this HP Printer if it is not

listed? Or can we download the WIndows 2003 driver from HP? And if

so, do we choose a PCL5, PCL6 or Post Script driver?

 

Thanks -sorry for the confusion but want to be clear before purchasing

another printer.

That's what I said, yes.

There are some exceptions to the rule of "never install a 3rd party

driver": drivers which are officially tested and supported by the

manufacturer as TS compatible. AFAIK, HP is the only vendor which

publishes such a list, and you're lucky, your model is OK.

 

Be sure to download the version of the driver from HP which is

listed in the document!

Thank you again for your reply - I think I was just reading to much

into this issue and misunderstanding the English language.
