Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I've installed 10 TS User CAL Tokens in our customer's Windows 2003 Server.

The server is using Temporary Licenses yet, and these licenses will espire on

20th of January. The 10 TS User CAL Tokens are installed but not issued, so

they're ready to be used.

However, they're not issued and I don't know if it will work fine on 20th of

January. I want to check if they will work before the expiration date of

temporary licenses.

The TS Licenses looks like this:

SERVER

|--- Temp W2003 per device CALS - temp- "-" - 19 issued

|--- Exisiting W2000 TS token CALs (per device) - built in - unlimited - 0

issued

|--- W2003 - TS per User CAL Token - open - 10 - 10 - 0 issued (they're

purchased licenses)

Is there a way to check this? Or, is this configuracion correct?

Thanks.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Sounds like your Terminal Server is still configured to use the Per

Device licensing mode. You have to change it, otherwise your

clients will not be able to connect when their licenses expire.

You can do that in terminal Services Configuration - Server

settings.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Thanks Vera,

however, my Teminal Services Configuration - Server Settings looks like:

Delete temporary folders... : Yes

Use temporary folders by session: Yes

Licenses: Per User

Active Desktop: Disable

Permission compatibility: Full security

User by session... : Yes

License servers detection mode: Automatic

Is this right?

How can I check the purchased licenses?

Thanks!!

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Then everything should be fine.

Per User licenses are never issued, since they are currently

unmanaged.

Check the temporary Per Device license again, for the date on which

they were issued. This must be before you installed the Per user TS

CALs and switched the TS to use Per User licenseing (i.e. no new

temporary licenses were issued after switching licensing mode).

There's no real way to test, but you should keep an eye on the

EventLog on your server. If users were still on temporarry Per

Device licenses, they will get a warning everytime they connect,

starting 14 days before the temporary license expires. Since your

temporary licenses expire on 20 january, you are already past that

date.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Hi again Vera,

My temporary Per Device licenses show like this:

Issued to Issued on Expires on

DEVICE01 24-10-07 22-01-08

DEVICE02 23-10-07 21-01-08

....

DEVICE19 04-10-07 02-01-08

However, I tried to connect from DEVICE19 to Terminal Server (because the

license appears as expired) and everything was right and there wasn't any

problems. (But DEVICE19 temporary license had expired)

I thought like you about Expiration Message on Event Log, but no messages

have appeared on it (and it starts to be a bit strange for me...)

The only answer about it, at the moment, is that Expiration Dates on

temporary Per Device licenses are incorrect (I hope).

I'm very worried about this situation because my customer is using Terminal

Services to connect to the W2003 Server and then use Navision ERP system in

several Point of Sale shops, so, there will be a disaster (locally XD) if

they can't connect to TS and work as fine as before.

Thanks Vera. I'll wait your answers helpfully.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Again, you do not need to worry, everything is as it should be.

No, the expiration dates are not incorrect, but you are not using

Per Device licenses anymore, so that's why there will not be any

messages about expired licenses. All your clients are connecting on

per user licenses, and have been doing so since you installed them

and switched the licensing mode of the TS to Per user.

And your test with device19 proves that it still can connect,

because your TS is in Per User licensing mode.

The temporary Per Device licenses will automatically be deleted

from the TS Licensing Manager. This happens 31 days after

expiration.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Thanks again Vera,

however no TS Per User licenses are assigned to users. Do they appear in

assigned licenses? I think Per User licenses are assigned automatically to

users according to connections but... ...is there a way to change this

assigned tokens later?

Thanks.

As I wrote earlier:

>> >> Per User licenses are never issued, since they are

So you will never see the Issued count change from N/A, and the

available count will not change either. You will manually have to

keep track of the number of connecting users, to be sure that you

are compliant with the EULA.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

No. "unmanaged" and "not issued" mean just that. The TS will only

check if it can find a TS Licensing server, and that's it. You're

on the honour system.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Thanks again.

So finally, I won't be able to manage/or view TS per User license tokens

anyway when they start to work, is it correct?

Sorry about my doubts.

Thank you.

Re: Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens

Hi,

Let me add some additional re-assurance to what Vera

has already provided. You will not be able to view or

manage TS Per User CALs. They are unmanaged.

There are no Per User tokens issued.

Please read the following article in general, and specifically

the section "Management limitations for user CALs":

Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server licensing issues

and requirements for deployment

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823313

Please read the following article, it describes the fact that

Windows Server 2003 does not manage Per User TS CALs:

The function of Terminal Server CALs in Windows Server 2003

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822134/

Please open up Help and Support on your 2003 server and

search for ts cal. If you read the first topic you will see mention

that Per User TS CALs are not monitored.

Thanks.
