Does remoting into a console terminate Smart Card resource manager

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to remote into a console mode to a Windows 2003 server that

performs some operations using a smart card connected to a remote server.

When I initiate a connection, it seems that the smart card resource manager

on the remote server stops running. Can someone confirm this fact?

I know that it's not possible to connect to a reader that's attached to a

remote machine via non-console RDP. You can only redirect local readers.

However, in a console mode, it seems that you can't see any reader on either

side. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I checked the console connection to the server and the service was started

as expected.

Was the service started before the connection?

Are there any event viewer logs which indicate that the service failed to

start?

Also, when you try to TS from client machine to TS server machine, the smart

card present on client machine is redirected to server machine and user can

use it in his TS session. The user can not use the smart card that is

physically attached to TS server machine.

The Smart Card Infrastructure white paper describes in detail what happens

in remote sessions in Vista.

Re: Does remoting into a console terminate Smart Card resource man

Thanks for the reply. You've confirmed one of the doubts I had about the

capability of using the smart card that's attacthed to a TS server machine.

Thanks for clarifying that. However, I have one more question. I've run some

tests to analyze the behavior of the smart card in the TS session. It's true

that you can only detect the smart card that's locally attached in the TS

session. However, when I use mstsc /console option, I can't detect either

side of the smart card, even with a smart card redirection. It seems that the

console tries to detect the smart card that's attached to a TS server machine

but since it's within a terminal session, it fails. The log file generated

from the server side at the time when I established a RDP /console connection

also showed that the smart card service manager shut down.
