hi can any one help had email from my son he is in the navy but having probs he is on vista home on a sony laptop when he turns on it goes striat to scan disk it gets to 32% on step 2 then skips the rest goes to desk top for 3mins then closes down then restartsbut is not on long enough to do systom restore or reboot thank andymo :confused:

Because we will have to get you to forward are messages to him. Is he unable to have a navy IT tech have a look at it for him.

could you explain a little more please? A few seconds after it turns on it starts to scan for a disk?

 

Has he tried booting the laptop up into safe mode?

 

If none off the above work and he still wants to restore the laptop insert the restore cd that should have came with the laptop push the F2 key which will let you boot from the cd and follow the on screen commands.

 

 

WARNING! doing this will delete all data on the computer (will be like a having a new computer from the shop)

it does not scan for a disk it goes to scan disk like when you do a disk clean in accessories

Has he tried boot the laptop in safe mode and seeing if it still tries to scan?

agreed try booting into safe mode tap f8 at startup of the machine then choose safe mode......if you can get in there, get your son to check event viewer>system for any noticable errors,,,to get to event viewer..right click my computer tehn left click on manage..........

 

 

also does your son have a vista cd/dvd if so try booting from it,,,then is a startup/repair function that tests your system and os....maybe worth a shot......

 

 

how clean is the laptop it may just be simply overheating........can he get to some compressed air and blow the underneath near the cpu fan.........DONT USE an air gun....
