Hi Wolfey.......No I didn't.Should I have done?

Had the PC been Vista the monitor would have installed straight away as Vista has a most excellent driver database.

XP has a fair driver database but not as good.

Do you still have the old monitor to hook up to install the software?

If so, do that, then install the monitor software.

The monitor did install straight away when I plugged it in,the problem is I can't get a 1600x900 resolution setting.I thought by using the installation disc it may in some way help, but my pc instantly shuts down when I insert it.My old monitor died.

Ok right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose Properties.

Click the Settings tab and then the Advanced button.

Click the Adaptor button and tell us what is listed there.

This may be a scrappy graphics card you have installed.

Go into Control Panel and double click the Add New hardware icon, tell it what you want eg Monitor and it will probably ask if you want to install the driver auto or from a specific location.

The specific location being your cdrom drive.

What resolution options do you have, ie the range, min to max Dunnsdale?

Goes from 800x600 up to max of 2048x1536

Currently set at 1280x1024.

Monitor is widescreen 20" and shows pics slightly squashed.Doesn't seem as clear as my old 17" monitor. If I change settings to 1280x960 the pic looks crisper but I get a huge black strip either side of the screen.

Can you enlarge that by using the Monitor Menu?

I talk of using the Menu to physically alter the width by manualy resizing it.

What happens if you change the settings to a horizontal pixel resolution of 1600, what vertical resolution do you have?

What's the next size setting above 1600 x 900 that you can take it to?

Ok so in theory the next size below 1600 x 900 should be in your face, try that.

The next size below is the one I'm running now 1280x1020

The correct resolution setting being available can depend on the graphics card and driver. Although my Viewsonic monitor came with a driver, it wasn't this that made a difference to the available resolution settings. It was an updated graphics card driver that did. So, it might be worth checking to see if there's an updated driver for your card.
