I recently had all my desktop icons highlight themselves and rename to ad(1),ad(2),ad(3),.... and so forth. So, I right-clicked on each one of them and gave them their proper names. But I could not rename the Recycle Bin and to date its system-given name is ad(20). What is the cause of this? I use Norton-Antivirus and I did not get any virus attack message. I doubt this problem was caused by a virus. My computer model is HP compaq, operating system is Windows XP. How do I give the Recycle Bin its proper name. I tried searching all files but can't find it anywhere to put on my desktop. It is present and working ok, only the name is different.

danzil, I've just received your reply. Thanks for writing. I have already tried system restore and it didn't work. My Recycle Bin name remains ad(20). I'm waiting to hear from you. Please give full details of how to go about solving this problem (e.g. how to install your reg file).

Regards, Billsquare.

just use copy and paste.....right ok now save that file as recyclebin.reg or whatever you want....but has to end with .reg.

now double click the reg file and click on yes....or right click it and then click merge...

restart your machine......all should be ok.

let me know if not.

kind regards

Ok, danzil. Here's what I did. I copied everything you put down in notepad, saved and merged the reg file. I then restarted my system. Nothing changed. At the top of your response, you said something about deleting all the desktop icons. I didn't do this because it is not possible to delete my problem area (Recycle Bin). Also, the first option you gave didn't work because the recycle bin cannot be checked or unchecked in the display options. Can you clarify?

Hi

go to run and type regedit

click the + by HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SOFTWARE, Microsoft Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer, Desktop, NameSpace then click on {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and see if the value in data says "Recycle Bin".

Post back and tell us what it says there. I DO NOT advise in changing any in the registry yet. First tell if the info there is correct. I think danzil knows more about changing things in the registry.

Good luck

you can check the webpage first

Click Start / Run

Type regedit and press enter.

Open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT folder

Open the CLSID folder

Open the {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} folder

Open the ShellFolder folder

Change the "Attributes" data value from "40 01 00 20" to "50 01 00 20". Once completed change the "CallForAttributes" dword value to "0x00000000" (double-click and change value data to 0). You must change both of these values to get the rename to appear.

After performing the above steps you will be able to rename the icon like any other icon. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and click Rename and rename it to whatever you wish.

try this i found it on computerhope.com if you like you can look at the wbsite click here : http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000543.htm

hope this helps

Thanks a lot maynardvdm. I now have the rename option for my Recycle Bin. From time to time, continue hooking me up with other informative websites like ComputerHope.com. For now, I have only one other question. Can danvil or you tell me how to remove the reg file danvil created and I installed earlier. Will it have any adverse effect in my system. I'm completely new to reg files and so my concern is understandable.
