Hi i have a, ADM athlon 64 processor.

3200+ runnin at 2.01 GHz.2.00GB of ram (was 4gb before all my problems kicked it down to 2 as i know this can help things)

Windows XP pro 2002

I did have a External Harddrive 500GB that started to not let me take files. or see files. its now not working at all.

Then my DVD-rw stated to show as just a CD rom, i removed this and gave to my friend it works fine on his PC.

when i took the DVD-rw out the pc wont boot up and stops at verifying dmi pool data Hard drive for this is a IDE Excelstore technology J8160 150 ODD GB.

I have put in an old Raid 80 GB(HDS722580VLSA80) drive with a fresh windows to see if this will boot up. it did but my CPU usage is fluttering anytime i do anything not sure why this is doing this. any one help with this?

With this Hard drive working enough to use my pc i did a format on the IDE and put on a fresh windows, this came on windows restarted and when the PC got to verifying dmi pool data that was it nothing. please help guys

Hi Wolfeymole, thanks for your reply. the link you gave i have already had a look at, the Hdds did not have anything on after the format then i put in my copy of windows xp pro 2002,

I built this pc about 3yrs ago after my old motherboard went. and have never had this before with the boot up stopping at DMI pool. i dont think its my mother board or the 2GB of ram i have kept in as the hard drive am using is my old one from my last PC and is working with the 2 GB of ram and just a CD-rom and GFX card(with all drivers up to date) but the PC is lagging when ever i do anything the CPU usage from 2% to 30 40 some times 100% not horribly bad but not good (tips on a Fix for this would be good),

But as for the Hard drive i want to use i think i will need to get a startup disc and format the drive that way,

could there be something hidden that a format from right click format drive wont take away?

i just dont get why i can get one drive to work all be it with the crazy CPU usage- and not the other with all the same hardware.

Are you saying you used a hard drive with windows on from an old computer and installed it in this computer?

Ok what does it say exactly on the copy of XP that you have mate?

i just gave it another try to format the other Hard drive,

set it up as slave right click format took them out made it master again left the woorking one out and gave windows another go at an instal got as far as restaring after partition was made on windows instal and got stuck again at DMI pool, didnt get as far as puttin in the product key

All i am doing to be able to have this one working is swaping over Hard drives, both have the same windows on them.

the one i have going was formated from when i built this pc years ago after the old motherboard gave in, so was clean to put windows on to get something working its just a shame i have problems with the cpu usage not sure if its the Hard drive or something hidden.

It seems to me that either the hdd is knackered or the boot files on the disk are corrupt.

Is it scratched?

cd's fine - the instal was ok on this one just not the other, am thinking its the hdd thats knackerd to, is there a chance that a proper formad from fdisc could help? using a Bootup CD.

You said this and it intrigues me.

But as for the Hard drive i want to use i think i will need to get a startup disc and format the drive that way,
What do you mean?

Why do you need a "boot up" cd?

A proper copy of a legitimate operating system disk will do this.

FDisk is not applicable on an NTFS platform.

This i didnt know, on my first pc i have to use a boot floppy. i thought maby doing that way this time from CD that there is a chance that something was hiddin on my drive that was corrup,

and just instaling windows was not finding it with the windows format.

Looks like its going in the bin, i will buy another Harddrive see if that works and hope i dont get the same thing with the CPU usage

Scitso

I've used 98 boot floppies to remove non dos partitions like NT4 etc.

When you insert a copy of an NTFS operating system disk like XP, W2K then you have the opportunity to delete all previous operating systems on there.

This statement makes no sense;

It makes sence to me i know nothing about drive formats. and seeing i know nothing i thought there was a chance there could be some thing on the hard drive that was not being removed when i was instaling windows, and i know from the past that i have romoved partitions on my first PC with a friends help so that i could instal windows 98 on it, a long time ago.

It looks to me like my harddrive is not working with it being the main drive, as its working fine as a slave just now. and the only thing on it when i open it is windows(so it must have instaled some thing from the CD). it just dont want to get past DMI pool when its a master.

If this is a slave drive with windows on what drive is the Primary boot drive?

Possibly needed a hardware driver or did you install a new CD/DVD software?

I have put in an old Raid 80 GB(HDS722580VLSA80) drive with a fresh windows to see if this will boot up.

Did you install the hardware driver for this hard drive during install?

You appear to of made a few changes as in hardware put the internals back were they should be.Then enter BIOS and load defaults and see if that works.

Check your boot order is correct in BIOS such as hard drive first then CD/DVD rom.

When swopping and changing hard drives in this was often you need to reboot and repeatedly tap F8 and choose last known good config to make this work.

You should test the hard drive via restart poping in the install disk and boot into recovery console with command prompt and run chkdsk.

Did you remove any disks or floppies from the drives before attempting to boot?

cd's fine - the instal was ok on this one just not the other, am thinking its the hdd thats knackerd to, is there a chance that a proper formad from fdisc could help? using a Bootup CD.

You need a full install disk not a boot CD or recovery CD.

with all drivers up to date) but the PC is lagging when ever i do anything the CPU usage from 2% to 30 40 some times 100% not horribly bad but not good (tips on a Fix for this would be good),

This appears normal to me,depending on processes you use and what software.

You mention windows 98?Are you trying to create a dual boot?

It looks to me like my harddrive is not working with it being the main drive, as its working fine as a slave just now. and the only thing on it when i open it is windows(so it must have instaled some thing from the CD). it just dont want to get past DMI pool when its a master.

Do you have both SATA and IDE hard drive installed?

Possibly if IDE is trying to act as a slave then its jumper should be set as slave or cable select.

Is the CD/DVD (if rom drive is IDE)rom on same IDE cable as the hard drive? If yes then both being set as master causes a conflict.

Are you sure the IDE hard drive is in the correct port on mainboard?

Your answers are rather short of confusing if you could explain fuller the issues and all changes you have made then we could help you more.

JB.
