New RAM, very strange problem.

Hello guys. I recently bought 2 new sticks of 512mb of RAM for a very old PC.

 

I installed both pieces...the computer beeped continuously.

 

I removed the second one...it worked fine.

 

I tried the second 1 numerous times but the computer just will not take it, even though it is exactly the same as the first.

 

 

After about the 5th try...it wont even accept the first one now.

 

This is so frustrating!

 

Help would be appreciated

Hi Rootman, how much RAM was in at first and in how many sticks?

Try removing all the sticks, the old and the new, then one by one try a stick at a time. At least the old ones should work, and this will tell us if any of the new ones are duff. It does happen.

Also can you tell us The model and make of the computer, plus the same about the mother board, and all the sticks of ram, make and type will be a great help in finding if the mother board can cope with that amount in the first place.

well mate its an old pc, and i had it working with 1...i was on it for about an hour with just 1

 

The old 1 still works...

 

1 of the new sticks was working. It orignally had 214mb of ram, I am trying to put in 2x 512.

I'll guarantee this board won't hold still for a gig of ram.

 

What speed is the stick that's in and what speed of SDRAM are you trying to install?

Ok, i just figured out that 1 of the sticks was faulty...because i now have 1x 512mb in.

 

Sorry the model of my computer is hard to tell...it's made my "Ram computers" (The irony). It runs on Celeron® processor lol.

 

It is an awful pc...and i am taking one of the sticks back tomorrow for a refund.

 

Thanks for the help guys...i guess 512 is all it can take anyway...doubt it would have help 1g like Wolf said.

Ok here's a quick question Rooty so we can have a rough guess as to the mem capacity.

 

If that is a PII cpu you have in there then forget anywhere near a gig of mem.

 

If this box boots at all what does it say when you right click My Computer and choose Properties at the bottom?

can you tell us the bios that it on that machine....jot it down when you post,,,,,turn on the pc ad it will say the make and version of bios....we should be able to ascertain the max RAM your machine can take....

you maybe lucky and there maybe a bios update for additional ram but dont hold your breath...

do you know what socket the motherboard is at all.or rough age.
