Hi

I have a problem woth my sky broadband...I have a new windows vista laptop, on which i installed the sky broadband intsallation disc...I can use the internet no problem. However, my housemate, who is on windows xp lap top is having trouble connecting to the internet, if she does get on it kicks her off again or is very slow.....The thing is that if she takes the laptop anywhere else she can get on no problem. I have not touched any settings on my laptop so as far as I know she should not be blocked, for some reason the sky internet only wants to let me on....any ideas?

If she's trying to connect via your connection then it may be your settings that are not set up correctly.

Are we talking of a wireless connection on the XP box?

Well, seriously, I don't know what's going on here Billy, are you with Sky or not?

Who uninstalled the Sky software?

What is this cable connection and who's that with?

Do you even have an ISP any more?

You don't actually need the Sky software to connect up - the routers are pre configured.

They normally send a small card that has the wireless settings printed on it.

On XP, just click the wireless network icon in the system tray, find your network, click connect and then type in the key.

Have you tried it that way?

i agree with tootech.

sounds like you are both trying to dial up your connection which just wont work......

the 2nd user just needs to browse for wireless networks then click on connect, then add the key in and oila....

well in theory lol.

let us know if we can help more.

"I have a new windows Vista machine".

Exactly are you new to how to setup Vista?

Have you setup file and printer sharing on the Vista machine?

On Vista the workgroup is set as WORKGROUP in XP is is usaly set as MSHOME.

You need to set XP workgroup to WORKGROUP.

Tootech is correct if you are running Sky broadband the disk supplied is only to show you how to setup the router.

Possibly a firewall blocking.

Also possibly another network being picked up from somewere else can slow or drop a connection or to close to mobile phones or cordless phones etc.

i kinda agree with jellybean...

you may just be picking up another wireless connection.

i do not think the workgroup settings would cause this, only sharing files or accessing a network resource will require a workgroup setting. or unless you are using ICS - internet connection sharing.

remove all saved connection in your wireless properties, then try again, make sure the SSID is the one for your router, and make sure the key is correct.
