Hello this is something that has come up in conversation, with my laptop having two hard drives can i actually put programmes that i sometimes use onto this data hard drive as some programmes that i have been using have slowed my laptop down on starting up and have heard in conversation that this can be done.

Please could someone verify this and let me know that when i install the program how i get it to go onto the 2nd hard drive

I hope this is understandable

thanks

A laptop does not have two hard drives Babs.

What you may be confused about is the fact that you have another partition that looks like a hard drive.

This may be a Recovery partition.

Your best bet is to get an external hard drive and put all your personal stuff on there.

One or two do Wolfey - HP DV9000's for example have two hard drive enclosures, one either side at the front of the unit :)

It doesn't matter where you install the programs, they still add startup entries so nothing changes.

Your best bet is to work out what programs are causing the slow startup and decide whether or not you want to disable their entries.

That's a state of the art lappy and if that's what Babs has then I apologise.

First I will agree with tootech, wherever a program is installed, if it is scheduled to run at start up it will slow things down. You will need to configure the program to not start until needed or even get rid if not needed.

However to answer how to install to the different drive, you need to know which letter it is assigned.

An example being, the main drive that has the operating system is normally assigned the letter "C", other drives such as CD or DVD drives will be given the letters "D" and "E" etc.

When installing a program in most cases the installation wizard will at some point tell you it will be going to "C:- Program files" or similar. It is at this point that you change the drive letter to whatever letter the second drive has, say for example it is "F", so you would change the path to read "F:- program files" You may firstly have to create a program files folder in Drive "F" though.

I will stand corrected if I have missed something or got it slightly wrong.
