heckler55 Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 G'day again team! im running xp home, i/e 8, avg and bigpond wireless broadband modem. i have always had a problem with connection at start up. connection manager says im connected and i have full signal strength. but all i get is "internet explorer cannot display web page". so, i disconnect, unplug and turn modem off. this works 9 times of 10. its huge a huge pain in the bum. bigpond cant/wont help. they say its avg and i should turn it off! avg say do not turn it off. i dont think its avg, i think connection settings maybe incorrect... any ideas? thanks! RandyL Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Hi heckler; Well it could be a failing modem even if it does say you are connected. I highly doubt it though. I've seen issues with certain firewalls and AV causing this. You need to see if this is one of those cases. Try disabling AVG and see if the problem goes away. For that matter I would uninstall AVG altogether and install one of the products we recommend. Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Recommended Security products As a side note you could try Firefox to see if it's a browser issue but once again I highly doubt it. heckler55 Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 update Gday, Thanks RL for the reply. i think you're on the ball there. i spent three hours searching and trying all known solutions. no joy yet. as you say it appears to be AVG related. i've sent them all the diagnostic data they asked for, so its a waiting game. unfortunately my renewel came up last month, so im stuck with it. will repost if and when i get to the bottom of it. thanks again. RandyL Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Hi again: While you wait you could disable but not uninstall AVG just as a test. But of course use a free AV in the mean time. What firewall are you using heckler? Please do inform us of what AVG says. It might help many people. Thanks heckler. Quote We are all members helping other members. heckler55 Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 result Gday Team, im happy say i have resolved the AVG problem. After more reinstall heartache, i took RLs advice re: the link "freepchelp recommended security products", and chose BitDefender. It works beautifully! Community knowledge comes through again! Thank you. Quote
