Do I need a better power unit?

Do I need a new power unit?

Heres what my current one says:

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii31/jamesyyyya/DSC00083.jpg

Im upgrading my PC. Iv ordered a new graphics card (Its cheap and crap, but better then what I have now):

Play.com (UK) : Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3450 / 512MB / PCI Express 2.0 / Graphics Card : Computing - Free Delivery

Im also looking at getting a better processor:

http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/processor-issues/7479-need-new-processor.html#post53491

I might also get a new hard drive, but I want to see how much money I have left after the graphics card, processor and possibly power supply.

Do you think I need a new one?

Thank you,

James.

Hi,

I think your board is a Foxconn, but its not listed on their site.

It may be this one P4M9007MB-8R2SH as I see your CPU-Z lists it as a DixonsPC.

Do you have a make and model number for the PC, it may help track down the full board spec.

On the case, my PC says 'Ei 205' (Ei System). iv upgraded it to vista premium and added a 2gb stick of ram incase your gonna look at the specs lol. Iv also ordered a new graphics card.

Thank you,

James.

No. There are only 3 things on the mother borard, the 2 things in the previous post and a barcode with random numbers.

Ok. I found the details here: http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/Motherboards/detail_overview.aspx?id=en-us0000243

It supports all these processors:

Intel® Core™2 Quad, Core™2 Extreme, Core™2 Duo, Pentium® D, Pentium® 4, Celeron® D processors, Socket T (LGA775)

Ok. I found the details here: Foxconn - Products: Motherboard

Ok. 1 more question. On the link you gave me, it has this above the overview/ sepification area:

Home - Products - Motherboard - Socket 775 - P4M9007MB-8RS2H

I hate a look at the processors you mentioned and although Core™2 Extreme caught my eye, it was too expensive lol. I looked at the pentium 4 and it is within my bedget, however, I site im looking at says 'Socket 478' but the one about my motherboard says Socket 775. Will it work? Here it is:

Intel Pentium 4 (Northwood) 2.8GHz 533FSB Socket 478 512Kb Cache OEM Processor - Ebuyer

Also, a think a moderator merged my Power unit thread into this one (sorry by the way lol). Its just below my first post. Will it be able to cope? Thanks :)

Hi

If you had a little more this would be better:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor - Ebuyer

The power supply should be fine, its not a high-end graphics card.

Edit: You need a socket 775

What socket do I have? The Foxconn page said it was socket 775, but the processor I found says socket 478. Im now really confused.

I think Maynard means that any processor you want to fit must be the same as your motherboard a "Socket 775" I am not that well up on these things, but I assume a socket 478 CPU may not be compatible.

Sorry, cant seem to edit my message.... anyway,

Im gonna get this:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor - Ebuyer

Do I need to buy thermal grease separately or will this come with some or can I use the one on my current chip?

Oh and, on my motherboard, theres 2 power things beside the fan. Is it ok if I take the both out when install my new processor to make sure the right one is out? Theres a small one and a medium sized power lead in it. Thanks.

As far as I know, you will have to get the thermal compound separately, it doesn't come with the new CPU. I will also add that the existing stuff will probably have dried and may even need scraping (lightly and with care so as to not remove metal) so old thermal paste will not work.

I know you are on a limited budget, but do be prepared to buy good paste and not just any cheap stuff. You may regret it later.

Have you thought about upgrading the heat sink and fan to a better one too? that also will be a good investment rather than using the old one.

Why remove power plugs and leads from the mother board?

You should have the mains power turned off where the computer connects to the mains, unless a plug or lead is in the way, there should be no need to remove them from the board.

Yeah I was thinking about a new fan. How much? On the site, I found these, but they seem rather cheap, so are they not good long term?

Heatsink (with fan)

Akasa AK-956SF Socket 775 heatsink with fan Cooler - Ebuyer

(my current one has screws, so will I need to find one with screws or will this be ok?)

Thermal compound:

Extra Value Thermal Compound Silver Grease - Ebuyer

(seems rather cheap)

Zalman ZM-STG1 Thermal Grease - Ebuyer

(more expensive, but more of it).

Or are there better ones?

The link on Ebuyer is a Retail pack

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor - Ebuyer

It will come with a heatsink and fan, with thermal grease already applied.

It's not a bad setup and will keep the CPU cool even with a bit of overclocking :D

Im my opinion you'd be wasting your money buying aftermarket coolers unless you are looking for serious cooling capabilities.

awesome. Saving money :) The box did appear to be kinda big for a small thing... although company's do usually do that... lol, Thank you :)

I have this comp.

It's a EiSystems Ei 205 (DixonsXPPC) I think PCWorld own them.

The motherboard is a Foxconn P4M9007MB-8RS2H. VIA P4M900 Northbridge chipset, VT8237A Southbridge chipset.

Processor it should come with

Celeron D 356 (3.33GHz 512MB L2 Cache)

512MB Slow DDR2 (some value RAM).

Western Digital Caviar 160GB IDE HDD

Unbranded DVD+/- RW drive - Dual Layer IDE

Cheap 300W PSU

A good 3000RPM Foxconn CPU fan

Unbranded or Unknown Case fan

You can actually turn this into a gaming computer, you can use Dual and Quad Cores including the Dual and Quad core Extreme editions.

I updated the BIOS to the latest and Last (ends with P52)

Updated to latest chipset drivers

Put in 2X2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer RAM DDR2-800

Getting a new graphics card soon, but currently use a Sapphire HD 2600XT 512MB GDDR3.

The western digital as they usually do, started catching fire, turned off by my new 750W PSU lol, so overkill!

Put in another DVD drive, a Plextor PX-712A updated to latest firmware 1.09

Put in a Maxtor 200GB IDE HDD (I'll eventually get SATA!!! :P)

I changed the CPU to a Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz @ stock, 8MB L2 Cache)

I got it brand new very cheap from ebuyer for about £130!!! (OEM edition, just the CPU) (I hope I'm allowed to mention sites, only just signed up!)

I took off the CPU cooler and heatsink, cleaned it with some Akasa TIM Clean, put the new CPU in, put some Akasa Thermal Paste/Compound on, and everything works.

I have the same Case fan and case, and my Core 2 Quad runs at 25-40 degrees C, very cool :)

And when I get my new graphics card, I'll kick Crysis loads! :)

Hope I could fill in a LOT MORE information
