USB drive in Win98se

Recommended Posts

Posted

When I plugged a USB drive into the USB port on my Win2K machine, I

instantly had a new drive!

But on my Win98se machine, on bootup I'm informed that it found "new

hardware" and I'm given the opportunity to install the driver for it. (I

ain't got one.)

Any suggestions?

TIA

You need the drivers. Does the manufacturer provide any? What's the EXACT

make & model?

Get a driver from the manufacturer or try this one:

Re: USB drive in Win98se

Forget about the one at the previous site. Get the one here:

http://www.ec-software.com/downloads_mscomp.html

It's Microsoft Help Workshop. I checked it out and it looks legit. Heck,

this even has the option to ONLY let you change certain things if you're

translating.

Just playing around, here.

yes, get the driver!

And don't forget that in 98 you install the driver BEFORE you connect the USB

device.

Re: USB drive in Win98se

Unlike XP, and apparently 2K, 98SE does not come with a bunch of drivers for

USB devices.

Thus, one normally installs the driver first, then plugs in the USB device

second, although sometimes the reverse is OK.

This begs the question as to where one finds USB drivers for 98SE?

The answer is usually from the company that made the USB hardware. In this

case, whomever made the USB drive. The instructions/manual that came with

the drive might have a small note about the availability of drivers for 98SE

on the support web site for that company. Or, if the drive came with a CD

of tools/progams, the drivers might be contained therein.

Note that 98 is sometimes a bit picky about mixed USB 1.1 and 2.0. If the

device is 2.0 (very likely today), but your computer hardware only supports

1.1, there may be no driver for tha combination under 98. And, 2.0+2.0 is

more likely supported than 1.1+1.1, since almost no one makes USB 1.1

devices anymore.

If the manufactuer's support website does not list drivers for 98SE (or

win9x more generically), then you might try a Google search for generic USB

drivers for 98SE.

Re: USB drive in Win98se

I found a 2Gb thumb drive in a box from auction.

This is the generic driver that worked for me

http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php

nusb33.exe or something like it, scroll down the page.

I installed the driver, it wouldn't work, so I took a punt the thumb drive

had been

password protected, so I formatted the drive, and bingo

we had a winner. (I have USB1.1 and it works fine)

Good luck

I fear I may not have been clear in describing this as a "drive"-- it's not

an electromechanical disk drive-- it's a solid-state "memory stick".

The make is Centon.

It's not marked with any model number, just "512MB".

Re: USB drive in Win98se

You seem to have been clear enough.

Get a driver from http://www.centon.com or use one of the generic drivers

suggested.

Re: USB drive in Win98se

That's not good enough. Too many Centon USB and Flash drives to choose from,

and not enough info on the site to figure out which drive you have, though I

suspect it's called a DataStick. Question is, which one. I have a copy of

Everest 2.02 on my site for folks to use (it's obsolete but good enough.) It

should identify the "drive more accurately.

http://grystmill.com/shared/everesthome220.exe

You want to make sure that the drive is attached and that Windows tried to

install it but failed, and it thus has a yellow "bang" (exclamation point)

in Device Manager. To get to Device Manager, right-click My Computer and

then click Properties.
