Hi, new to forum.

I have a dell dimension 4700, with windows xp. Problem is it is so slow, can take up to 45 minutes to connect to web, 10 minutes to print a document, locks up all the time, often gives a low virtual memory error reading. A friend suggested wiping the hard drive and using the restore disc that came with pc, only problem is I did not get a disc with the pc from Dell. Any thoughts on what I can do to fix this besides buying new computer, it just isn't in my budget.

Thanks.

Off hand I would say that your hard drive may be on its way out. I would backup all your files immediately.

As for disks check to see if your computer has the option of making a set. If not you can order them from the Dell support site very cheaply.

If you need to replace your drive you will need them.

How much memory do you have in your PC?

If you have an up to date security suite, and say 512MB memory your PC will struggle, especially if you have alot of other utilities running.

Do you clean up the temporary files and folders and defragment your drive at all?

Dell's normally have a hard drive test utility in the BIOS - just following on from RandyL's points, its worth running that utility to check your drive health.
