HI - hope some kind soul will be able to point this out to me,

trying to get over an issue that seems to be caused by a too high a mtu setting (some webpages used to be able to access and can be pinged with a lower mtu but not browsed) on on using a guide to lower mtu

its asking for local area connection name - now where would i find this? ipconfig all

give me the Windows IP Configuration and

wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter

using this guide(PChucks Network: Setting The MTU In Windows Vista) to do it

To see what interfaces you have on your computer, type

netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces

To change the MTU, type

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=nnnn store=persistent

where

Local Area Connection is the name of the network connection on your computer, from the list obtained above.

nnnn is the desired value for MTU.

Hi Vkky, Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help, I don't know that much about networking myself but have you carried out the suggestions put forward by PChucks page, and what were the results?

I hope that will help one of our network experts.

hi thanks.

followed what i can set out on the page Just stuck with this have tried using within the brackets for local area connection -

 • wireless network name
 • wireless network adapter name
 • host name of laptop

all of this resorts in message on cmd of ;- the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

-------------------------------------

Problem I have been having is trying to connect to the website www.familytreedna.com when trying to connect on either laptop or pc (both vista) getting error msg (this has only occurred lately was able to connect to the website without any hassle 4 days ago- )

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

 •
Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
 • If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section. This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

However the website can be access via blackberry so its not that the website is down. :S

when following the help advise ruled out other issues as

The website can be pinged with mdu at 1472 anything higher and all packets are lost but not browsed, this seemed to point to the mdu.......... now stuck on what to put in the brackets (local area connection) in order to get the mdu changed.

(hope this makes sense to some one as i'm way out of my depth)

OK Vkky, I also am out of it too as my speciality is sound and its hardware, definitely not networks. However one of our more expert guys should be on line later or in the morning and hopefully get you up and running.

Hi vkky,

As I understand it, you have recently been unable to browse to the site www.familytreedna.com and after some research, have found a troubleshooting guide that tells you the MTU of your network adapter might be the problem.

The Maximum Transmission Unit is basically the largest single chunk of data that can be sent over a network. This setting should rarely need to be altered. If you could browse to this site before, and your connection hasn't changed, then I think it is unlikely that this is the problem.

Just a few things first;

Is that the only site that gives you problems?

Can you browse the internet normally otherwise?

You said you could access it through your blackberry, is that over its own telephone network, or through your internet connection?

The maximum MTU an Ethernet connection can have is 1500. If you ping a site, specifying an MTU of 1472, then the overhead cause by the ping packet is 28, so 1472 + 28 = 1500. Anything higher would take the packet over 1500, and you would receive error messages telling you that fragmentation is needed.

One of the IP addresses of www.familytreedna.com is 66.249.108.74. Can you ping this without any modifiers to the command, e.g, by typing the following into command prompt:

ping 66.249.108.74

You should get something like:

Pinging 66.249.108.74 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.249.108.74: bytes=32 time=153ms TTL=45

Reply from 66.249.108.74: bytes=32 time=154ms TTL=45

Reply from 66.249.108.74: bytes=32 time=154ms TTL=45

Reply from 66.249.108.74: bytes=32 time=154ms TTL=45

Ping statistics for 66.249.108.74:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 153ms, Maximum = 154ms, Average = 153ms

If that works OK, then try typing into the command prompt:

nslookup www.familytreedna.com

You should see something like this in your answer:

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: www.familytreedna.com

Addresses: 72.250.198.229, 66.249.108.74

Let me know how you get on.

I wish people would not mention MTU as it can be more trouble than its worth if you mess it up. How do you connect to the net is it via a router and whats your ISP?

The reason being the MTU is also on the router and this can be the problem some ISP run a funny MTU. Is there any other pc that connects to the sites ok off the router to see if its the router or the pc
