Guest sit Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Hello. From perspective of licence - Is it allowed to install VMWare-Server on 2003 Web-edition as Host-system? In case yes - Does 2003 Web-edition as guest need a second licence ? Did already some searching, but wasn`t succeesful to find proper info on that. Thanks.

AFAIK VMWare server is free to use, you need to make free registration only Then when you convert or build new VM you need to have valid license, that means Winows 2003 server web edition Someone correct me if I'm wrong

However I read 2003-Web-Edition does not allow to install/be configured for additional Server-applications. So, is VMware-Server consdidered to be a Server-application? i.e. Virtual Server from MS refuses to be installed on 2003-Webedition, afaik.

You've got it a bit backwards here'; there shouldn't be any problem where this is concerned. You aren't installing VMWare (application) on Windows 2003 Web Edition - you're installing Windows 2003 Web Edition on VMWare. For all licensing issues, it's best to contact Microsoft directly.

In Vmware-Server I want to run a second 2003-Web-edition as guest. This installation will serve as a Webserver for 5 Webs. The reason I want this to do: Possibility for easier and faster Restore in case machine crashes or in case I am ruining installation (sometimes happesn ;-) )

However does MS allow installation of VMware Server on 2003 Web-edition? I know it is a working scenario, supported by VMWARE, but they don`t have to care whether this is legal from MS`s perspective.

I don't know what Web edition considers an "application." As mentioned, you should call Microsoft.
