Guest john Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I have a network of 3 machines running 2k3. The server can get on the internet, but the workstations can't get on it. Also the workstations can't ping DNS with name or address. They also can't ping the gateway on the WAN side. Would appreciate any help.
Guest AU Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 RE: Can't ping DNS What is your setup; you have any routers or anything? You should be able to ping the server and the gateway, can you be more specfic? "john" wrote: > I have a network of 3 machines running 2k3. One is connected to the internet and the other connected to the LAN. The public one is the only one connected to the router and the private one and the other two machines are connected to a hub.I checked and there was no firewalls on the machines. Are there any ports besides 53 I need to open?
Guest AU Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Re: Can't ping DNS Ok.. So you have a server with 2 nics; one cable is going to the internal LAN, the other cable is going straight into the router. The clients G/W should be the server or it could be the adsl router; and their dns servers should be the servers. If you can't ping by IP then DNS isn't your only issue; you shouldn' thave to really open any ports on the hub; is the hub working? can the 2 workstations on the hub ping each other? You have everything in the right subnet and ip scope? They cannot ping the gateway on the WAN side and so they can't get on the internet. They also can't ping the DNS.
Guest AU Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Re: Can't ping DNS Ok, let's work on the DNS issue first. If all the machines can ping each other on the LAN via IP address and not via DNS you have a DNS issue. Are the workstations using the server's IP address as their primary dns? I assume DNS is installed and functioning correctly on the server. Do you have any firewalls in place? With regards to the Internet; have you configured routing and remote access in Windows 2003 server? Why don't you just use a router that interfaces directly with ethernet and have that as your gateway and point the workstations to that IP address. What kind of switches do you have in place?
