Guest sir-bob Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Hi: Can anyone help me with a method by which I can monitor the status of a printer service on a WIndows 2003 Server. I would like to get a warning on my network management system when a printer goes into an offline status. I wish to obtain this from the server and not from the printer. Is there possibly a method using SNMP or is the status perhaps stored in the registry? Thanks Bob

I don't think this can be done the way you're asking. The closest thing you can possible do is to use the printer's built-in alerts. Not sure of your models but HPs let you set alerts that can go out via SMTP to a pre-defined e-mail address stating things like out of paper, low toner, drawer open, printer jam, etc. It's not super granular but lets you have some notification of common problems. Server 2008 is supposed to have a more robust print service monitor and allows a bit more control but I have not used any of the 2008 release candidates in a production environment to confirm this. - Thee Chicago Wolf
