Good instructions at

http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html

We assume your son has the install CD and a boot

floppy (free from http://www.bootdisk.com if needed.)

Do you have a Windows 98 CD? If not, use Find>Files & Folders to look for

files named WIN98*.CAB (WIN98, asterisk, period, CAB). If you find a few

dozen in a folder, that's the installation files. If you have those files,

or the original CD, that's great. You'll also need the Product Key, however,

so don't go reformatting or anything just yet.

What make & model computer is it? Do you see any error messages before the

machine boots into Safe Mode? Restart the system and while it's cranking up,

repeatedly press the F8 key until a menu comes up that let's you choose

Normal Mode. What happens if you do that? Please report any error messages

exactly as they appear.

Your post is not clear. You say there is no system installed but then say

you can get on via safe mode which indicates there is a system. Please

clarify.

Besides Gary's advice, see here:

My guess is that it was a typo ...but

unless one has a win98 cd...the only way to otherwise re-install windows

would be if the setup files exist on the drive.

They'd typically be in C:\windows\options\cabs

Then all one would need to to is find the product #

here is a thread on that

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Windows-95-98-1061/Windows-98-Product-key.htm

That can be done from safe mode.
