pogsy Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Hi all, I fixed one problem...now it seems my computer has found me some more?! I keep getting 2 Microsoft Runtime Visual C++ errors...one on MSN Messenger, and one on IE8. Looked for solutions of the net, but I'm not sure why these errors have suddenly started occurring. I also keep getting a screen up saying that IE has encountered an error and an option to click ok or canel to debug. Also...I keep getting an 'out of memory line:38 etc' And my windows virtual memory is too low! Why is this all going wrong at once?! Quote
Jelly Bean Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Hello there. Try this for virtual memory: Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab. In the Performance pane, click Settings. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change. Change the Initial size value and the Maximum size value to a higher value, click Set, and then click OK. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box. Please check how much free space you have left on your hard drive. pogsy Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 Hi Jelly Bean, Well I did what you said and downloaded from that link and so far I have had no errors! Yey! Your way was comparatively simple compared to the instructions I found on microsoft's website :-) I increased the virtual memory, only by a small amount to start with as I'm not sure how much you can set it to or what it means. I also have around 25% free space on my laptop (is someone gonna shout at me lol). I store most of my stuff on an external hard drive. Not sure if it's the long way about it, but was thinking of getting another one to back up the 1st ext hard drive. Thanks Jelly Bean :-) I like this place! Quote
Plastic Nev Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Hi, First to go a bit further we would need to know how much RAM is there in your laptop now. We could then tell you the recommended amount of virtual memory you should have. To explain what virtual memory is,-- It is when Windows runs out of real memory or RAM to use, it then uses a portion of the hard drive to store what it needs while doing a task. When the warning pops up that virtual memory is running low, Windows shifts even more data around from RAM to hard drive and back to RAM to try to compensate while doing whatever you have asked it to do. Therefore taking up time to do it. This is why you find the biggest and best recommendation for increasing overall speed and performance is to "A" find out if there is room for more RAM, and secondly buy and fit more if there is. To find out if more memory or RAM can be fitted, how much extra you can install, and the price of it, have a look at - RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq.
