CD/DVD Drive Saying "The Sims 3" is Blank Disk :(

Hi guys, I got a brand new copy of The Sims 3 today, all sealed.

When I enter it into my disk drive (im on a HP Pavilion Laptop btw) nothing happens for a good 10-15 minutes except the drive makes A LOT of weird noises, then finaly when something does pop up its windows asking me what I want to do with my blank disk....

Before that pops up, if i try do anything with the "DVD Drive" in My Computer, the computer crashes

after I get that message (asking me what I want to do with my blank disk) It lets me "explore" the Disk Drive icon which confirms windows thinks its a blank disk.. so im stumped, first I tried ringing the EA helpline, then I got told the longest person in the line has been waiting 20 minutes.. yeah *puts phone down*

oh yeah and according to HP, all my drivers are up to date.

So help! :(

also big update! I just tried the disk on a friends laptop to make sure it wasnt the disk, and it popped up with the installer almost immediately so I know it isnt the disk

It could be a bad drive but you need to rule out any crap on your computer first.

I say this because if you have been torrenting you could have all manner of crap on your computer.

Your system has also not been updated with Microsoft updates so that could cause infections.

Now about your system being clean. It is not clean. That program is not a malware cleaner. In addition any program that purports to do what it says has to be worthless at best and may have corrupted your registry.

Considering what I know of your system so far you're in for a world of hurt and cleanup. That is why Wolfeymole suggested a reinstall.

By the way what security do you have?

I cant reinstall vista i dont have the disk, and last time i tried to do a system restore it caused more problems than it fixed.

Hi Alli, I will try to explain.

First, as has already been said peer to peer services and programs are now so well hacked by those intent on getting as much info off simple folk like yourself, that it is very near certain that by now your machine will be full of trojans worms and worse, probably very well hidden rootkits as well.

With all of this, even though now you have removed all the P2P programs, I am afraid it is now probably too late.

Secondly, you have been using Auslogics Bootspeed, was this in its registry cleaning mode?

Sorry, but nearly all registry cleaners are a rip off at best, and using them usually does damage to your registry. In all honesty there is no need for any cleaning of the registry, odd bits left behind by removed programs or other things are ignored by Windows XP and above, and so do not slow your computer nor interfere with its normal running.

Thirdly, you say you have both Avast and AVG running. Bad move there my friend, two antivirus programs conflict with each other, usually resulting in any protection provided being compromised by this conflict. My advise is dump AVG and stick with Avast, its better any way.

Next issue being a firewall, do you have one? are you using Windows firewall? It is OK ish but there are better, see our recommendations from link below.

Next and last, do you have any anti spyware or anti malware programs on? These are different to anti virus programs but in these trying times are now more essential than just an anti virus.

Fortunately they can be installed side by side because they only run when you ask them to do a scan, and as long as they are only scanning one at a time, they will not conflict.

Two we recommend amongst some others are Malwarebytes, and Superantispyware. I also suggest a real time blocking program such as Spywareblaster as well.

Look Ali if you think we are being a bit negative here it's because we are trying to help you and you don't appear to be listening to our suggestions.

Your more bothered about what you have got and will this or that work rather than take notice of advice that will get you back working again.

Yes you can reinstall Vista because you have a Recovery partition on your hard drive namely D:

Simply press F11 on boot up and follow the instructions and the laptop will be like new again.

After it is you will have the opportunity to make some recovery disks in case your hard drive dies.

Now I have a feeling you won't want to do this procedure because you'll lose all the stuff you have got from Pirate Bay, am I right?

The only reason I didnt want to do it is because its just borderline a lot of work to get things back to how they where before, i was just hoping there was some other way to get this game to work..

And I dont have any virus or trojans on my computer its clean, Unless you think that both AVG and Avast would have failed to miss them, in which case what would you say wouldnt miss them?

Also the reason I run both is because Avast is the best Anti-Virus, but it has no web protection where as AVG constantly gets spyware from internet surfing and protects me online.

I will do a full recovery manager restore and then try again with the disk, If that doesnt work then what could it possibly be?

Once you have reinstalled Vista go straight to Microsoft and get all updates.

It will probably ask you if you want to do that immediately after the install.

Reinstall Avast only along with Super Anti Spyware and Malwarebytes.

Obtain a firewall or use windows own.

Then and only then try the sims.

Read what is written Ali.

AVG is in our opinion not one of the best bits of Anti Virus software out there and that's why we don't recommend it.

As Nev said you simply cannot run two AV's side by side as they will conflict with each other ok.

SAS is an anti-spyware/anti-adware program. That is a different kind of malware than viruses.

There are also program suites that do both.

The point is never run two real time anti-virus programs at the same time.

You can run multiple antispyware/adware programs in real time.

You can run just a scan with an antivirus program without installing it as real time protection. MWB will do the scan and remove for free if you want without installing the real time protection feature.

Kaspersky is a good antivirus program. You can install SAS along side it or just use SAS free to scan and remove. You can also use MWB free scan as I said.

Use one AV only in real time protection. Antispyware/antiadware you can run alongside.

Install Avast only as an AV. (free)

You have vista so Windows Defender is installed and that is one form of realtime antimalware. (free)

Use SAS free and MWB free for the occasional scan and removal of malware. (free)

If you want other realtime malware blocking only look at the products we suggested such as Spywareblaster. (free)

Get Mcafee Site Advisor to warn of malicious sites. (free)

If you want to buy SAS and MWB you can and that will give you even more real time protection if you're paranoid.

Keep in mind that SAS and MWB can only be run as real time protection if you actually pay for it. The free scan version is fine to run.

If you get a hacked, cracked or any torrent version you will likely be right back to an infested machine that we will not help you with per our rules.

Get back to us when you are ready to update windows and get the proper programs after the reinstall.
