Guest Frank Castle Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hey Folks, I have printers in 40 branch offices. I have all my servers in a central location - my data center. I need to set up a print server but I am concerned about setting one up for 40 branches to print from my data center. I want to avoid buying 40 print servers - even if ther are inexpensive little ones from a local store. So, my question is - Does the "Print Directly to the Printer" feature enable me to bypass the print server and even though the print queue is hosted in my DC - allow me to print to the printer that is physically located in my office? Thanks in advance. -fc
Guest Harry Bates Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Re: Remote Printing Are these 40 net branches all on the same AD domain tied into your DC? I personally would not put printing on a DC if there a large quantity of users as print drivers sometimes hang and cause problems, which could essentially bring down your DC and cause problems with authentication. Separate little print servers, such as Linksys will not help you because you would already have an IP print server built into your printers if you were mounting them to a Windows server. What you would need would in effect be Windows boxes at each site to do the chore. Can you simply use one of the not-so-overworked workstations at each site (like receptionist desk) as the print server for that area, share it out and then just list in the directory? You could set up an extra workstation also as backup. Guest Frank Castle Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Re: Remote Printing Thanks for the reply. But let me reiterate: I do not have local servers. DCs are not a factor here, IOW, I have a dedicated File and Print server but its at a central locataion (not at the branches). I also want to avoid using workstations for security, performance and change control purposes. My question is specific: Would using the "print directly to the printer" send the job (data) directly to the printer or does this data still need to be sent over the WAN link to the server and then back down to the printer. I am trying to avoid bogging down the WAN link for user traffic. Thanks again.
