Have you got a handset with a connector that would connect to the modem, assuming it has two RJ-45 sockets (the port that connects you to the telephone line) If so, can you connect the handset and check that you get Dial Tone, then activate the modem, you should be able to hear what the modem is doing

Also you could try an AT&F command to re-initialize the modem before it dials, go to Control Panel Select Phone and Modem Options, select the Modem tab, then find your modem and double click on it, select the Advanced tab and in the box enter AT&F

There maybe a recommended default modem string, check in your manual

I'm not so sure altering or resetting the modem strings command is the way to go.

Since you have been trying things which we know nothing about I would start from scratch and remove the modem via control panel and reboot.

After that a no dial tone usually indicates your settings with your ISP are wrong. Such as password or user ID or the number you dial in to them.

The best thing to do is uninstall and reinstall the modem. Then contact your ISP because even if you are using a disk from them to set up your connection the software may be outdated.

One thing I would ask is why you got an external USB modem. Is there no place to plug in an internal modem?
