Implementing New Server to be TS License server

I have an existing 2003 server that has been assigned as the TS license

server - However, there are no actual licenses installed beacuse the

application server the clients connect to via TS is a Windows 2000 server,

thus XP clients have the built-in license option. I will be putting in a new

server that I want to become the new TS License server because the existing

one is getting demoted to be used for something else. So, technically since

I don't really having any licenses installed on the existing server since

they are all using built-in licenses, once I activate the new server, will

those client start getting logged and recorded on the new server

automatically? Do I have to do anything to the clients? Do I have to

deactivate the current server before activating the new one? Is there a way

to transfer the "database" from one TS server to another?

The only thing that you will have to do is to make sure that the

W2K Terminal Server can locate the new TS Licensing Server.

Here's how to do that:

 

239107 - Establishing Preferred Windows 2000 Terminal Services

License Server

You don't have to do anything on the clients.

You won't see any clients listed in the new TS Licensing Manager

immediately, because most clients will still hold a valid license.

But when their licenses expire and have to be renewed, you will see

them appear in the new LS, under the license type "Existing Windows

2000 Per Device TS CAL Token" - Built-in

 

If you don't want to wait for this to happen, you can delete the

existing license from one of your clients, to force it to grab a

new license from the new LS. That way, you get proof that

everything works.

Deactivate *and* uninstall the old LS after you have verified that

the new one is functioning as it should.
