Cannot change the name of a windows 2003 domain server

I have a member server that I cannot change the computer name on. The change

button is grayed out. The machine is a member of the domain and you can

login with domain credentials. I am logging in with domain admin credentials.

Has anyone else run into this and resolved it?

Thanks.

Hello Larry,

What is the exact error message? Also check that the machine is pointing

only to you internal DNS server.

Best regards

Is this a "member" server only, or is it a Domain Controller?

Changing names of Domain Controllers is afaik not possible.

Yeah, I've only ever seen this happen when the server happens to be a

DC...are you sure it is not a DC? I've never had a problem renaming a

member server before. The option has never been greyed out like that

- only with DCs.

Hello alorbach,

You can also rename a domain controller, but that is not the best solution.

I prefer the start from scratch instead of renaming a DC.

With the netdom tool you can also rename a Domain controller:

Was this member server ever a DC?

Is the member server in an OU or the default Computers container?

Is there a security policy such as an enhanced security tempate at the

domain or OU level in place?

What modifications, if any, were ever made in the Default Domain Policy?

How about in the OU where the member server resides?

Any third party software installed? This can include personal firewall,

antivirus, security software (McAfee, Symantec, AVG, etc etc etc).

Are there any errors on the DCs' Event logs?

Can you post an UNEDITED ipconfig /all of this server and one of your DCs

please? This will give all of us a better idea of how your AD infrastructure

configuration and possibly a resolution, along with the other questions, for

starters.
