WINS Server - Is it necessary?

I have a full Windows XP/Windows 2003/Exch 2003 network - I will be putting

in a new domain controller and removing 2 existing ones. One of them has

WINS installed. I'm guessing since I'm fully in Native mode that I do not

need to install WINS on this new server since all requests will be using

DNS, correct, and replication will still occur between my new DC and my DCs

at 2 other locations?

If you are using Exchange, YES.

If you have more than one location and want to browse between locations,

mapping shared drives using a UNC path, directly connecting using a UNC

path, printers, etc, YES.

If you want to allow users to browse for resources, or if you need to browse

for rescources, then YES.

Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange 2000 Server require NetBIOS name ...

The following Exchange functionality still depends on WINS name

resolution: ... but server clustering does not necessarily require WINS for

name resolution. ...

Browsing is based on NetBIOS resolution, not DNS. DNS is simply a hostname

database for hostname (FQDN) resolution. AD doesn't need WINS, but many

Windows creature-features do.

You may even have apps that require it, such as SQL, MSDE (using ODBC), and

many others.

Thank you! I just found this morning that I was going to need to do

this. And, I could answer YES to all of your statements below. Thank

you for the confirmation!
