Hi All,

I REALLY need help!!! I'm desperate...My laptop screen has completely broken- it got crushed. I now need to use boot n' nuke to complete erase my hard drive and get rid of the laptop. The problem is that in order to boot from my usb and run "boot n nuke" I need to get to bios which I can't see when I switch my laptop on- my external monitor shows black and nothing else (connected using vga). My external monitor only starts up once windows xp does- the log on page! So how do I get my laptop to output through my monitor when it first starts up, bios and all.

Please help....anyone??

Many, many thanks....

Just a suggestion, but if you are throwing the laptop because of the duff screen, why not dismantle it, remove the hard drive and keep it.

Once you acquire a new computer either laptop or desktop, you can then buy a USB connecting caddy, fit that hard drive into the caddy and run it as an external drive, thereby recovering any data. Also from that point you can reformat it to use it for an external drive to hold whatever data to use as a portable drive.

Most laptop have a function key to turn on the monitor you should just press that and then the monitor should work. But as above keep the HD and memory and throw the rest. Are you claiming on insurance?

Thank you so much for your suggestions. How easy is it to remove the hard drive? Is there anywhere I can look to find instructions? How would one go about doing it. I had no idea there was a "caddy" I could use for external drive use- brilliant idea and I cannot thank you all enough....

I can't believe just how good you guys are and this forum is. Thank you so much again. I hope taking out the hard drive won't be too technical a job- I'm a complete rookie. Will follow up your ideas...thanks again...

What is your lappy Mz as you may find that once the screws are removed the drive that is under the flap may need kind of lifting up at one end to release it from the hard drive/laptop connection.

Hi,

I have a sony vaio sz2xp- 13.3 inch laptop. I guess the big question in the end is whether to spend money replacing the screen or to invest the same money towards a new laptop? Any suggestions?
