I have two computers both running under Windows XP pro. When I try to install AutoRoute 2004 on the first computer I get a Windows Installer message saying “Error opening installation log file” But when I install the same program on the second computer the install goes without a hitch. Any ideas?

Dave.

Hi DavidCharge,

Do you have XP SP3 on both of your computers, and are both fully updated via windows update?

Are you using the same installation disk for Autoroute on both computers also?

Has the other pc had Autoroute on it before as the error Error opening installation log file normally means it cant uninstall as the log is missing. Other than that it could be an error reading the cd copy the cd to the hd and try again

Yes both machines have SP3 and yes i have used the same CD It will install if I copy the contents of the cd and reun in from there.

David AutoRoute 2004 is old. 2007 is the newest version. Why are you installing the old version?

Is the first computer a desktop and the second computer a laptop?

You said It will install if I copy the contents of the cd and run in from there.

I take that to mean that you have now successfully installed it on both your desktop and your laptop via copy the contents of the CD to your hard drive.

Is this correct?

Thanks, both computers are desktop - What I ment to say was that it will install if I copy the contents of the CD to the hard disk on the machine with the error message. What is confusing me is that I only get the error on one computer - it seems that it is trying to write the log file to the CD which ofcourse it cann't do.

David I asked several questions.

Can you reply to all of them please?

The thing is David that what you have done here is illegal.

Allow me to quote from Microsofts EULA for AutoRoute 2004.

1. GRANT OF LICENSE.

This Section of the EULA describes Your general rights to install and use the Software Product. The license rights described in this Section are subject to all other terms and conditions of this EULA.

* General License Grant to Install and Use Software Product. Microsoft hereby grants to You, the user, an individual, non-transferable, non-exclusive, single user license to install and use the Software Product solely for (i) Your individual viewing on a single computer, device, workstation, terminal, or other digital electronic or analog device ("Device"), (ii) printing for Your individual use, (iii) saving it on Your Device's hard disk drive for Your individual use, and (iv) for no other purpose without written consent from Microsoft (except to the extent expressly permitted by other provisions of this EULA). You may make a second copy of the Software Product and install it on a portable Device for the exclusive use of the person who is the primary user of the first copy of the Software Product, provided that such use is governed by all the terms and conditions of this EULA. Except as expressly permitted herein, any reproduction or redistribution of the Software Product, including any Content, is expressly prohibited. A license for the Software Product may not be shared.

Also this;

A license for the Software Product may not be used concurrently on different Devices.
And finally this;

5. BACKUP COPY.

After installation of one copy of the Software Product pursuant to this EULA, You may keep the original media on which the Software Product was provided by Microsoft solely for backup or archival purposes. If the original media is required to use the Software Product on the Device, you may make one copy of the Software Product solely for backup or archival purposes. Except as expressly provided in this EULA, You may not otherwise make copies of the Software Product or the printed materials accompanying the Software Product.

We shall give you the chance to reply as we think you may be under a misapprehension about the software licensing but we do feel there is no other course of action open to us other than to close this thread under Rule 4 once you have.

This is a most regrettable course of action but feel free to ask questions on any other matter.

I understand what you are saying and I have removed the program from one of the two computers, thank you for pointing this out to me

Thank you for understanding David as Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help does not wish to be viewed as some kind of police state but simply the fact that we don't want Microsoft on our backs should we offer any other advice contrary to their EULA on any given software.
