Guest Bill Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Our small non-profit is ready to upgrade from Windows 2000 Small Business Server to 2003 Small Business Server. However, we want to do it on a DIFFERENT computer. We've purchased a faster computer, we plan to install 2003 Small Business Server on it, and retire/reformat the current/old one. Are there instructions on how to upgrade when using a different computer? The upgrade instructions I've found seem to be to upgrade/install on the same computer. We want to transfer the domain controller to the new computer/installation. We want to backup the Exchange Server and restore it to the new computer, or transfer the data somehow. And whatever else needs to be done. Can someone direct me to an existing (I hope) upgrade instruction sheet on how to do this? Thanks, Bill
Guest Jaime Barahona Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 RE: Installing/upgrading on different computer-2003 SBS I would move the windows 2000 install to the new server. 1) backup the complete server including system state, then leave the old hardware intact. If you have the data on a different drive, you should be able to move it with out problems. 2) do a windows 2000 install on the new hardware, you should not have to install the SBS on it, since the restore will take care of that. After you do the install run the restore. Make sure you put the data drive on the new hardware and make sure you keep the same drive letter since you files from the restore will point to it. 3)run the SBS 2003 upgrade process. This might seem a little complicated, but it is not, and since you have not touch the old hardware you can always move everything back. Since Exchange requires to have the same server information to restore to a new hardware, the restoring of the system state will help. They are other 3rd party way of doing it for a $$$ fee, but this is a way to keep the old server intact for "safety net". good luck "Bill" wrote: > Our small non-profit is ready to upgrade from Windows 2000 Small Business > Server to 2003 Small Business Server. Guest Alien Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Re: Installing/upgrading on different computer-2003 SBS Only one SBS is permitted in domain, so putting two operable SBS servers won't work as you should want ;) SBS allow only one DC in domain so keep up in mind ;)
Guest Jaime Barahona Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Re: Installing/upgrading on different computer-2003 SBS correct. But since the other hardware is being retired, doing the restore offline then removing the old server hardware, and putting the new hardware in place should be easy. Its not something you can do without taking the network down for the day or at least a couple of hours. Guest Bill Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 RE: Installing/upgrading on different computer-2003 SBS Ryan, Thank you for the good/correct link. That is very helpful, spells out different scenarios, lets me choose the want I'm using. Jamie, I don't think you have a very good plan. I woudn't want to install old/about to be retired sofware on a new computer. Fortunately, that's not needed, as the instructions on Ryan's link spells out. Thanks to everyone for helping, I've printed the instructions out and am ready to start the long journey :-) Bill "Ryan Hanisco" wrote: > Have a look at the following link, it waslks through a bunch of upgrade/ > migration scenarios. > > http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/upgrade/default.mspx > > -- > Ryan Hanisco > MCSE, MCTS: SQL 2005, Project+ > http://www.techsterity.com > Chicago, IL > > Remember: Marking helpful answers helps everyone find the info they need > quickly. > > > "Bill" wrote: > > > Our small non-profit is ready to upgrade from Windows 2000 Small Business > > Server to 2003 Small Business Server.
