Mapped shared folder does not stable

Recommended Posts

Posted

I setup a new Win2003 Server with AD and all client computers ( XP and Win98

) can join the domain successfully.

I try two ways to map shared folder:

1. using the Windows Explorer on client computer,

2. using logon script.

The shared folders map to the client computers are not stable, sometime they

can connect to the server but sometime they can't (no reaction when I click

the mapped drive).

How's to fix it?

Thanks,

Joe.

Hi joeau,

This could be a couple of things.

When you are seeing the error, see if you can ping the server that is

housing the share. This could imply a DNS or networking issue. Also, since

you have win98 in the Mix, you need to have WINS configured. This can often

be the problem as NETBIOS is used rather than DNS.

If you can ping it, but cannot open it, try opening it by UNC path. This

would imply a credential or authentication problem.

Also, make sure you don't have overlapping scripts or policies adding or

dropping drives.

RE: Mapped shared folder does not stable

Hi Ryan,

I can ping the server at any time, and I have no overlapping scripts or

policies adding or dropping drives.

I already enable WINS on server as follow:

WINS address : my server IP

Enable LMHOSTS lookup

Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP

In Event Viewer, there is an error with ID 4204 which is related to WINS for

every 40 minutes.

I think it is the problem to make the mapped shared folder unstable.

What can I do?

Thanks,

Joe.
