Guest Peter Jam Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Hi: Not sure this is the correct forum to post a Shadowcopy problem otr not, direct me elsewhere if necessary. I have a W2k3SP SP2 server that is used as the Data Protection Management Server (DPM) for our network. In the event log I am getting the following error: Event Type: Error Event Source: VolSnap Event Category: None Event ID: 28 Date: 1/15/2008 Time: 8:06:36 PM User: N/A Computer: SLOSSDC02 Description: The shadow copy of volume C:\....specialty.smgpplc.com\MSDEWriter\Filter Data could not be created due to a failure in creating the necessary on disk structures. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Data: 0000: 00 00 00 00 02 00 58 00 ......X. 0008: 00 00 00 00 1c 00 06 c0 .......À 0010: 00 00 00 00 7f 00 00 c0 ......À 0018: 03 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........ 0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........ Believe it or not, I found a Hotfix that showed the same Data, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833167/ A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for Windows Server 2003 dated 9/13/2007. I applied for it and was told they could not find it. Then an hour later it arrived?? It was a password proteded zip.exe file which extrated 2 files. One of them produced a directory called: "Symbols" and a text file. the other was apparently was only for SP1 as it said my Service pack was newer. The text file was called PRIVATE_PACKAGE.txt and said: Due to a bug in Hotfix 4.0 we cannot make submissions to the symbol server without uploading a file. This is a dummy file in place of the GDR that you were searching for. Once the testing of this fix is complete it will be released on http://www.microsoft.com/downloads Very confusing. What does it mean? What should I do to fix? Wait? I am having a time with DPM, so need to correct all event errors in the hopes that DPM works out. I will post at DPM also.
