I've had an exciting idea for a major new area of functionality for excel.

 

I'd like to see the concept of translucent worksheet overlays implemented.

 

I frequently use Excel to model quite complex IT systems and would derive major benefit from being able to visualise my raw worksheet data, the formulae which is being applied to my data, some form of graphical representation describing the relationship between the formulae and the cells they relate to. *

 

I envisage being able to group formulae into layers and pull in the relevant layers (which may for example relate to subsystems within the model) as I need them.* This would alos serve as means to prevent information overload!

 

This is just one way in which I see the transparency concept being use, I'm sure there are many others.* For example you could pull in graphs and all maner of graphical representations of data from colour coded, named tabs at the edges of a worksheet and understand how that models the underlying data.* Or even use the graphics as a means to assist in navigating multiple, large worksheets.

 

What do people think?
