Guest Tom Baxter Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Hello all, I was hoping to get some recommendations on very good Server 2003 beginner books (or online resources). I'm hoping to find material that is especially strong in explaining Accounts, Permissions and Policy Settings, from a BEGINNER'S perspective. I'm banging my head against the wall trying to understand these concepts. I would also like to ask a couple newbie questions, if you don't mind. I am using Server 2008, RC1. In "Computer Management | Local Users and Groups | Users" I see the local user accounts, Administrator and Guest. I know there are several additional built in accounts that Windows creates as well: NT AUTHORITY\LocalService, NT AUTHORITY\System and perhaps others. Why is it these built in accounts do not appear in the "Users" panel? These are accounts (albeit, built in), are they not? I have a second newbie question: There are several pre-defined "User Groups" (e.g., "Backup Operators", "IIS_USRS", "Replicators", etc.). How can I find what permissions are associated with each of these groups? For example, the description for "Backup Operators" says, "Members of this group can back up and restore files on a computer...". That's a very vague description. How can I find out, specifically, what permissions are associated with a particular Group? Actually, the same question applies to a User -- is there anyway I can find out what permissions a particular user has? I'm sorry for these basic questions. My main reason for posting is to find a good book or online resources. Thank you very much.

I bought Mastering Windows Server 2003, Upgrade Edition for SP1 and so far what people have told me about it being comprehensive and written for beginners was bang on. Do some research on that title via Google and see what other have said about it. Perhaps there's even a revised edition for SP2 but I have not looked sine last year. - Thee Chicago Wolf
